SUNDAY MORNING NOV, 16th.
Beauregard’s ‘sting of abolition” was poisonous and deadly. The day nas not long been
passed, when the vast inajority of the Northern people had as soon be stigmatized as horse
thieves as abolitionists.. It was considered a
“heinous offense to apply the term to al.nost
any maniof influence in politics. The stigma
had but to be fixed upon a man to destroy his
political aspirations forever. Slave driving
influence had obtained such control over the
minds of men all over the Union, that not a
generous sentiment towards an oppressed but
patient-race could be expressed aloud. The
minds of men were tyrannized overt by the
fear of prescription from office. Wee all re«
member ia what bonds public sentiment was
held by the terror of 4 word—« word too,
expressive at once of liberty, justice, sywpathy with the wronged, and of the better
feelings of the human heart.
The times have changed. We live in an
era of revolutions; and the greatest revolution of the era is that in public sentiment.—
Men dare have a noble impulse now and
breathe it forth to the world, and good opin
jons are contagious. Those men who apply
the term; “abolitionist,” with the expectation of wounding the feelings of a generous
‘mind by it, launch but a javelin gone out of
date, after the mailed, impregnuble vessels of
later and better days. There is, and should
be, a pride in being classed with the philosuphere and philanthropists of the world. Every enlightened intellect in the republic of
letters, con be nothing but an abolitionist.—
There may have been a difference of opinion
as tothe proper time to move most successfully for the benefit of the enslaved, but,
qe assume, there never could have beer in.
‘,,, any well organized mind in ite normal condition, a thought that slavery should endure
forever. Such a sentiment is abhorrent to
humanity and justice. We go farther and
say, that in the midst of all the howling we
have hitherto heard against the Garrisons,
the Phillipses. the Greeleys and Beechers,
liberalized minds that kept silent from motives uf policy, respected the motives of
those philanthropists, although net agreeing
with the policy of ogitation at the time.—
Public opinion has bveu overborne, but the
“‘gtill small voice” has always been heard by
the generous hearted the world over. Now
the best feelings of our nature are exprensed.
We can range ourselves boldly with the noblo spirits who ‘have been pioneers in a cause“A few relics of a tossiliferous age may continue the cry of ‘abolitioniem,’ as ifit were deadby yet. They but proclaim their own ignorance
(and enslavement. Who had not rather be ranked with William Cullen Bryant, George Bancroft, Ralph Waldo Emereon, Henry W.
Longfellow, Dr Holmes, DeGasparin,—and in
short, with every peet, literateur and philanthropistof the world, as an abolitionist, than
be associated with the herd that have no feelings ef humanity or are so blind as not to see
the favorableness of the crisis to emancipate
the oppressed? We would not let such an
opportune moment pass as the present, to
throw the weight of our sympathy in the
scale where the cause of justice is being
weighed. Thankfulare we that our eyes
have beem permitted to see this day, when we
can add oprhamble voice to the acclamntions
_. for the freedom of all mankind, without feeling that cur country is more imperilled by the
. set. It should be s cause for congratulation

A LwLu.—There 1s an apparent lull in the
contest fot Senator. No one uf the combat:
tants has liung out the white flag, that we
are aware of, but all by cominon consent
seem to say they have had “pie enough” for
the present. Park went up to Mariposa to
attend toghis business there, some time age.
Phelps made a dash in the absence of his rival, but we have to learn that-he captured a
single vote. He, too, has skedaddled tothe
apot where business calls. The last heatd of
Conness he was standing sentinel at the big
hotel ef San Franciscy,-and beating the
blackest of old Republeans in talking against
the Chivalry. John is a sharp one. “Brown
is supposed to be around. Having taken a
partcin the primary meetings of San Francisco, and made some pretensions, “it won’t do
to give it up so.” Ali, however, seem to
have concluded to be quiet for a time, perhaps to gather strength for the final contest.
As near as we can find out, the friends of
Phelps claim he has, ‘‘dead sure,” fifty-five
votes on the first ballot, and offer te bet all
the funds the Federal officers in San Francisco ean raise that he will be nominated on
the second ballot. “to a dead moral certsin.
ty.” Park's friends know he bas fifty odd
votes, first, last, and all the time for bim, and
they will back up their opinions with the
Mariposa estate if disputed. Conness, we
believe, is confident of forty votes, or thereabouts, and Brown nearly as many, ,,while
Starr King has friends, and Stephen J. Field
also, in the Legislature. There is another
gentleman, too, if he would dabble in the
dirty pool and shove himself ahead with the
presumption and audacity of others insteat
of modestly attending all the time to his busieess, would have as many votes to count on.
as any of the aspirants we have mentioned.
Of course, where so many votes are counted
for each aspirant some of them must go into
the lobby for their complement, and if we
are not greatly mistaken, some of the aspirants who blow the most, will have to depend
upon the third house for about all the support
they get for the United States Senate. It is
about time the Legislature of the State, uninfluenced dy political hacks, chose a man
for his character, services and talents to represent the loyal people of the Statein the
Senate of the United States. Let the lull
continue till a choice has been made.
Eptpemic aMonG Horses.—The San
Francisco Bulletin saya there seems to be an
epidemic raging in some of the stables of that
city at present. Quite a numberof valuable
horses have lateiy died, and as many as three
the past 48 hours. It is semething then ature
of a lung disease, and generally prove fatal
on the third day after attack. ‘It is supposed

Log. —A correspondent in Kona, thus writes
the Honolula Advertiser of the 14th of October: .
A few days since, in passing from Kuilula
to Kealakeakue, I observed a large log on the
shore. I went to it and found it to be the
California 1edwood. It, was 24 feet long, 4
feet through at the bottom, and 3 feet Sinches
at the other, end with both ends sawed off.
It did not appear tv be worm-eaten. Some
three years ago an Oregon log drifted on shore
in Kealakeakue Bay; where the bark was on,
‘no worms had touched it but where the bark
was off, the worms had gone through »nd
