mode of drafting men for the service of the

drafting will not be resorted to, yet the law
is wot without interest. = ae

The Silver Age says it has recently been dis~
covered that the coal indications extend to
the north and south of the original Whitinan
claim, a distance of two or three milés, making the entire range: over which good. signs
are met with, fully five miles long and ubout
two and a half wide. Quite a number ef
claims have been lately surveyed different
parties along El Dorado Canon. The heaviest
deposit so far discovered is on Vol. White
man’s grounds, though other claims near by
promise well. ;

SixTY-THREE.—One of. the’ Richmond
papers stated that when the news of. the
capture of Hatteras Inlet reached the North.
Carolina legislature, a disgraceful scene occurrence in that body'which it would not give
currency to. Now it has transpired that the
‘disgraceful scene” was nothing less than
sixty-three members of that bedy rising in
their seats and. cheering for the suecess o
the Federal arms.

herself famous by a single instance. ‘There

“In great numbers,” was the answer.
‘‘What squeamishness !” said her highness.
’“ Why don’t they eat beef and mutton ?
Tam sure I would do so rather than to
starve!”
NEW MeExico.—Recent intelligence from
the Territory of: New Mexico, says that the
Governor the1eof has ordered out the entire
militia force as a Home'Guard. The people
are much incetised at the cowardly afid traitorous surrender of the United States forces
in Arizona, under Major Lynde, to an ‘infe
rior force of rebels and outlaws. » The nafive popultion 1s excited, and will defend
their territory. from Texan invaders.

To the Citizens of Nevada County.
. APPEAL is made through this method
to the patriotism of the people of NEVADA
COUNTY, to rally to the call of their Country,
now in her hour of peril and need. Itcannot 43
that patriotism and valor are wantIng among
Americans. Their heroism has been most signally displayed in two Wars against Great Britain, and against the Mexican States. Greater
and more necessary, and consequently more glorious, is the contest in which our Country is engaged against intestine foes. What was comparatively a pastime when engaged with foreign
enemics, has become a herculean labor now. e
Nation wants Soldiers—Soldiers in heart and
soul Who will see their Country in distress
without flocking to her glorious but insulted
