Mr. H. B. Thomplishment of Horses,
citizens of Grass Valley,
son has consented to issue a Directory of
that place, in gannection with the one he has
slready.commenced on, for Nevada, He will
visit Grass Valley, this week, for the purpose

AnTI DisuNton.—A. Washington dispatch
toa New York paper says:
The fact that Senator Hammond, of South
Carolina, has definitely announced himself as
a candidate for re-election to the United
\pates a secession of Southern States. It was
upon the belief that that gentleman would
nut again be a candidate that several South
Carolina politicians have been so forward
with their ultra sectional manifestoes. . “
There are little or no means of knowing
the ¢haracter of speeches made—upon the
at m Southern States, but I am satisfied
from information lately received, that there
is scarcely any disunign feelivg in Virginia or
North Carglina. The questions put to Mr.
Douglas, at-Norfolk, were thrust at Senator .
Hunter, a few evenings since, at Petersburg,
when he answered that he was opposed to
dissolution upon mere-apprehension ef. danger. At the first speech of Mr. Pryor, in his
distriet, he ‘denounced the idea that the mere
eleetion of a Republican was cause. of disanion. By the way it is but sheer justice to
state that this gentleman utterly.denies having made use of language to the effect that
‘he would enact the part of Brutus te prevent the inauguration of Mr. Lincoln.
i” Some.ot we st. Luu papers have
just published a romantic story to this effect:
Aman named Hardwick went from Ohio
tu California, ten or eleven years ago, leaving « wife and two children behind him. The
children died in time, and Mrs. Hardwick,
hearing nothing of her husband, whose lettera had miscarried, and concluding him dead,
sifted again to one Mathews, and removed
Mathews died some th him te St. Louts.
t. Louis by one of ‘the overland stages, accidentally met and recoguized his wife, at
one of the markets. Amazement, hysterics,
explanations, &e., followed, and Mr. Hardwick ‘remarried his wife, and adopted the two
Mathews children as his own.
Goop FoR SACKAMENTO.—The Sacrameato News gives us the following :
“ At the first ward poe on the day of election, the sum of five bits waa contributed towards the Washington Monument Fund.
This large donation was enclosed in a Bell
and Everett ticket. One of the Democratic
judges the amount over to the County
Reeo with the returns of the election.
This would undoubtedly be the banner precinct of the city and county, (being the hotbed of the bankers aud millionaires) but that
the third ward did uot, contribute a single .
dime.”
ALLEGED SHOOTING aT ALLEGHANYrows. — A communication has been forwarded to us, dated at Forest City, October.
{November} 10th, but without real signature, stating that an affray took place between one Pat, Gray and John Bulleund,
at Alleghanytown, originating over a game
of berry Gray fired at~ Bulleund, named
Pomeroy, who returned the fire—the first
shot tuking off Gray’s right thumb, the
second taking effect in the arm, and the
third passing through lis body. He was
living at last accounts. Pomeroy was arrested and tried, but discharged on the
ground that he acted im self defense.—

The wide reputation which Dr. J. Hostctter’s “ STOMACH BITTERS” have attained
during the past year bespeaks ita excellencesjn a
more forcible manner than any words which we
can offer. It reuovates, purifies and strengthens
the system, and aids the stomach in the perforny

as a sovereign specific, and, therefore, to procure
it’in the best possible way, should be the object
of the public. We commendit with more than
usual zeal and confidence, believing and knowing’
as we do, that it stands foremost of the many
preparations ef the day, for imparting strength
vigor and tone to the system, and possessing the
curative powers for all similar diveases oriving

“ SuccEss—In our daily experience we are
often reminded how essential are industry and
perseverance to success in life. This is probably
nowhere mere strongly illustrated than in California. Here are individual instances of men
having risen to opulence in defiance of opposition
the most malignant. We have one in our mind’s
eye, in the person of L. J. Czapkay, M. D., of San

else why his immense success? A single view
