. There is much philosophy, as well as poetry, in the writings of the ancient Hebrews.
Poetic fancy and philosophic fact are beautifully mingled in the book of Job and in many
of the Psalms; bat, inno part of the Old

There isa mysterious beauty in the thought
that pervades it, which, clothed in the Shaks
pearian Saxow of the Protestant English version, charms even those who do not whe

eal allegory, in whieh the Royal Preacher,
-twith the pathos of thé poet and the rssearch
of the anthropologist, presents to the mind’s .
eye the phenomena which mark the decay of
the physical and intellectual powers in old
age. How often has this masterpiece of Hebrai¢ literature been recited and heard, in
certain mystic halls, charming reciter and . hearers by its-melodious rhetorie, while the
grandest of its truths and beauties remained
hidden beneath a vail of biological allegory.
To reveal its recondite excellences, the
briefest and best way is to give the passage,
entire, with explanatory notes below it:
“Remember now thy Creator in the days
of thy youth, while the evil days (1) come
not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou
shalt say, ‘I jaxe -no pleasure in them ;’ while
‘the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars

Become AMERICANIZED.—We saw,
yesterday, says the Marysville Democrat,
town, as large as life. The first was driving

Man KiLLED—A man by the name of Rudolph Longbien, says the Dowmeville Citizen, Wis killed at Cumberland Ravine, in
Sierfta county, on Sunday night last, by Andrew Currieux. ‘They were cabin partners,
and had some difficulty. Longbien had thrown
Currieux’s blankets out of doors, and when
he returned home a quarrel ensued, which
resulted in the death of Longbien. He was
killed with a miner's candlestick. Currieux
was brought before Justice Beckett on
Thursday, examined and acquitted.

THe INDIAN MASSACRE NEAR OREGON. —
Relative to this affair, heretofore ‘mentioned,
the Portland News of the 1 sii has the

.We yesterday afernoon a a brief conversation with Mr. J. W. Myers, head of the
unfortunate train of emigrants. He informs
us that there were 44 in the tram at the time
of the attack, all, with the ex ion of one
