~~ “HOME MATTERS. —
A Heavy Burpen. — Night before last,
Col.’ Potter (we won’t have him anything
‘skort of a Colonel) was expressing his belief
to our frend Blaze in his ability te toat him
(Blaze) from the latter’s place of business to
his owp.crib.on Main street. Blaze entertertaining a contrary opinion, expressed him-"
self xecordingly, whereupon the Colonel propesed to teat the matter instanter, agreeing
to stand the consommations, as the French
would say, for the crowd if he failed, provided Blaze would do the same if he succeeded. The banter was accepted and the
Colonel, placing himself in the position of
\Atlas supporting the World, Blaze gently
let his-avoir-du-poids come down on the Colonel’s back, and the latter. with a grunt
the direct source of which it. was difficult to
detetmine, started, or rather staggered on
his way to his saloon. When in front of the
St. Louis House, the Colonel gave signs of
exhaustion and stopped to catch his wind,
and some bets against-him were made by the
spectators. He recovered himself, however,
and proceeded on his way, safely landing his
load at the place agreed, thereby winning his
bet, which was, of course, promptly liquidated by the loser.

te A gale of wind, which is said to have
done conziderable damage in Sacramento,
blew down the. telegraph wires betWeen that
have made it impossible to transmit any message between the two places for the last two
days, thereby depriving us of the pony’s dispatches which we expected to issue in an
extra form yesterday. ‘Phe public, however,
lost nothing beyond the allaying of their anxiety, as the news breught by this pony is of
no importance, beyond the fact that the army
of the Potomac, under Gen. McClellan, bas
made an advance movement.
RISE UF PRUPERTY IN WASHOE.—One of
our citizens who returned from Washoe a
few days ago, bought a lot, while at Gold
Hill, for $800, which it waz agreed he should
take possessiun of and pay for on his return
w the Territory frew a short visit which he
‘intended paying here. A few days after his
departure from Gold Hill, the owner of the
lot died, and when tbe purchaser returned to
Washoe, the property was advertised to be
sold by order of the Probate Court. He
bought it himself, in company with Mr. Levy,
of Cheap John’s, tor $2,200—an increase of
$1,400. Mr. Levy and H. H. Flagg, we understand, intend building a splendid etore on
that site.

te The District Court was occupied, all
day yesterday, with the case of Warren
Myers, on trial for the murder of Valentine
Brand, at Guston Ridge, the circumstancesof which appeared in the TRANSCRIPT, at
the time. The testimony was ail closed yesterday, and the attorneys on both sides will
make their arguments to-day. From the
tenor of a portion of the testimony, we infer
that the defense will rely on the’ ples of. in-'
aanity. Several physiciuns were called by
the defense, who explained to the Jury the
various. phases and degrees of insanity.

Diep.—We lwaru taat Andrew Malony,
who was stubbed at Poor Man’s Creek, on
been celebrated for taking the lead of the
worid in the matter of fruit growing, but we
yesterday saw a specimen at J.E. Gould's
stand, in the Pacific Fruit Market, which

quarter, the latgest ever known. .It‘stands
214 inches in circumference longitudinally ;
is 17 inches in circumference at its base; 134

Just think of 68 ounces of fruit in one pear!
