PHOTOGRAPHY —We have in this country. one photographic journal. England alone has six, allably edited. London boaste of six paotographic socicties ; and itis stated that every considerable town in Englind has such a society. The British Government saves $50,000 per annum in the reduction ot . ,” ordinary maps by photography instead of by hand. Photographers have taken the sun when in eclipse ; they:have caught un impression of a shell whizzing through the air, discharged from the mouth of a 3i-ineli mortar; they have~caught the wave as it broke on the shore, the san depicting even the drops falling from its toppling crest ; more, they kave not failed+n getting a “good impression” of ‘the head ef a criminal, executed by the guillotine, catching the severed head in mid air os it fell in the basket below. Photographic book marks and vis.ting cards are sold by the thousand; whilé photographic shirt studs and waistcoat buttons, ornainented with mictesc.pie minintures, are. now being daily produced in countless numbers at the buttun manufactories in Prussia; portraits of populur persons, Garibaldi, for instance, being ordered at a time. . On the autherity of a carefol Eng ish writer, all this phtographing requires the use of no less than _Awenty tons of silver per annum. Servep Him Rienr.—The following appeared lately in a New York paper: A young min, resident in the Thirteenth Ward, was cewhided on Saturday evening, Aug. 3lst It. is stated that, although a married man, he had been for some time past paying his attentions to a young lady, and was engaged to be married to her. But before the marriage the youug lady discovered his true character, and informed his wife. The two women then conspired to punish him. Oa tie Saturday evening in question, the young woman appointed to meet him m he’ Fourteeth Ward: Atthe proper time he made his appeafance at the place of ,appointment, buéiustead uf meeting one faity he met twe—his injured wite and intended victim. The women were each armed with a strung cowhide, and as seen as he came within reack they took him-vy the collar and administered a severe exstigation. The fellow ‘cried lustily for: belp, aad was finally rescued “from the indiguant females by officer Travis;of the Fitth, who tock him to the station hoase for sife keeping. GaB.—Of all the dangerous gifts*eoveted by mankind, says the phildsgpincal Quilp, there is none more pernicious than the gilt of gab. Cheap eloquence is the tomeof inodern civilization, and, like cheap bramly worse than worthless—neither being ple ant to the taste nor wholesome te the bowels. To make a 8. eech on every . possible occasion ; to debate all questions, importanc or unimportant, ina flu nt and vociferous style—w thout sense or sentiments, learning or logic, gaumption or grainm r, that.is the admiie! acco n lishmént o° tne dey, aid spoils more ambitious youngsters than all the sophisticated and pestilent petticoats in the country. A Philidelphia lawyer of reputation, being asked by « society of young men in New Haven to contribute money toward ‘‘a fund for unpremeditited or extempor aneous speaking” declimed, saying. “Gib is the fatal epidemic of Republies. What distracted Greece? Gab. What ruined Rome? Gab. What anarchied Franee? Gab! What will dism+mber this” Union? Gab.’ The ® lawyer was a prophet. Gab—gab has done y it. ‘ IMPORTANT FRUM MeExico!—The German ‘‘ Abend Post,” of Friday evening, says that it has been shown a private lett +r; dated Acapulco, September 15, from which it has made the following extract: ACAPULCH, September, 15, 135]. Information has just reached here to the effect that the united troops of England, France aud Spain are abent te make an invasion of Mexico, to force the latter country w poy the claims due to the above powers, and on refusal, to take possession of the entire country. ~__ P. 8.—The British have ‘already taken possession of the provinces of Yueatan with a force of 3,000. men. iii tr E.A.
