The partisan fight, as waged’ by the editors
and stumpers, has been. ‘waxing-hotter-and
hotter, and, if kept up in‘the dame ratio of
increasing earnestness, Heaveh only knows
how hot it will be by the dawn of election
day. What effect the news from Pennsylapirite of our California politicians, is a something we ean tell; « few days hence, better
* than we can to-day, As itis, the Republi] a vety marked feeling of satisdential game was all their own. How the
~ Douglasites, Breckinridgers, and Bellites reA GRAND Minive PROJECT.—In the town
of North Bloomfield, commonly, but improperly, called Humbug, an enterprising com‘pany'are about to undertake an immense
work, which, when eompleted, will be
source of almost exhaustless wealth. North
Bloomfield lies in the. valley watered by
Humbug Creek, which valley is divided from
that of the South Yuba by a tall ridge, a mile
wide at its base. This Humbug Valley -is
rich in auriferous earth, but Humbug Creek
does not afford sufficient fall to enable the
miners to wash the-earth. ‘The bed of the
South Yuba is much lower than that of Humbug Creek. The project about to be undertaken by the enterprising company, alluded
to above, is thus *tersely explained in-that
excellent paper the Hydraulic Press :. ** It
1s proposed to cross the dividing ridge between the town and the South Yuba, and
__ gard these ‘wondrous tidings from the east, . ow down in the canon of that stream, com_ 4s & matter known only to themselves. Of
‘course, they will put as good a face upon the
' ‘matter as they ean, though the news to them
can not-be otherwise than unpalatable.—
Well, this ia.a world of. disappointments anddisasters, and politicians are as apt to meet
with rubs and crosses as their less pretentious brethren of the human family.
The question now iy—How will this‘Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana intelligence affect
political feeling in California? For one, we
can answer, that we have not the slightest
idea. It is possible that the Douglasites,
Breckinridgers, and Bellites had no hopes of
defeating the Linconites in Peunsylvania,
Ohio, and Indiana, and, therefore, the news
will not take them by surprise; thus, the
war will go forward, as stoutly ag ever, in
California, :
It is somewhat strange that we have no intolligence from Mississippi and Georgia, in
which elections were held on the first Monday of October, eight days previously to the
Pennsylvania election. The election in FloTidw'was held-on that day, and there is an
tom from that state to the effect that Milton
: i(Breckinridger).tiad received a majority of
1875 in sixteen counties. It is possible that
telegraphic facilities are not so available in
Goeorgin, Mississippi, and Florida, asin Penn' sylvania, Ohiv, and Indiana, and this circum“Which the southern news comes in. own
and Minnesota voted on the same day with
_ Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana—the 24
Puesday of October—and there is no news
from there; but these are new states and
hot blessed with many telegraphic lines. —
There is every probability, however, that
they-are in the hands of tie Republicans.
"There yet two weeks between this moment
and the election ; and, if + is not particularly
a sin to wish time to fly, we could wish that
those two Weeks were over. ‘The Presidential garmie,-tow being played, however amusing it thay be to the players, has nothing alluring in it to outsiders, like us; and the
~ sooner we tre permitted to ‘escape from its
noise tind bitterness, the better we shall feel.
Our faith in the intelligence and virtue of the
American people, in the perpetuity of our
glorious confederacy, and in the enduring vitality of our free institutions. is so strong that
we dread no evil consequences, let the’elec‘tion result as it may.

A joint stock company is to be formed for
carrying this grand project into effect. Books

thirty sharce.of stock subscribed for on the

the nature of the rock encountered in its
