the most hardened chaps chained in. the cell,
cotiined.
In nédition to this he has employed two men,
one to watch in the corridor in the day time,
notwithataading they are pretty well corra’led, would attempt almost anything to get
their freedom again. Another thing, the
Sherff is determined to have the grates pretty well watched to keep outsiders from paceing in any thing whatever. The jail aod prieonera are theroughly examined every morn=
ing, aed if any of bis subjects can secrete
anything without hie finding it, they can set:

While Mr. Knowlton has been Sheriff of this
couoty he has attended closely to his duties
and endeavored in every possible: way to
guard well those who have. been. entrusted
to his charge, notwithstanding two desperaEe The night and day men at the French
Mill, on-Gold Flat, did a fine job a few days
since. It seems the day workgien challenged the night hands to drift as.much as they .
did, in the same ground and same number of
hours. They accepted the banter. The day
hands commenced and finished drifting, in 10
houre, twenty feet. The night hands went
-at iton the following evening and only suc
eeeded in drifting about twelve feet, which
is considered an extraordinary night's work,
as the ground ie hard quartz gravel, while .
the day hands accomplished a remarkable
big feat.

Nevada are exerting their whole energies in
preparing lint and bandages.

was rather monotinously spent.

Who Speaxs wext.—The citizens of
Alpha cvntributed, and yesterday remitted
to the Nevada Relief Association, the sum éf
$237 50, amounting to about $5 to each
man, woman and child in the town.
te The Grass Valley National says the
Allison Ranch Miuing Company, of that
place have already contributed $2,200 for
the gglief of our suffering soldiers in the East
Of thia amount $1,000 was forwarded to
the New York Sixty-Ninth regiment laat
Spring ; and $1.200 was contributed to the
Patriotic Fuad in this State a few weeks
since.
