I'd give the world to know * For though her look still whispers Yus. Her lips still utter No. : Why should she blush so when we meet, If I’m not near her heart ¢ Wertiny hand why tremble, when We undertake to part ? i wonder if she Ioves me ? Last night we were alone, And I thought there was a coldness Unusual in her tone ; Yet, toying. with her curls, I stole Oh! such a kiss! and though ; She looked unutterable things, She did not bid me ge! I wonder if-she loves me? To wake her woman’s pride, I feigned to love another, once! She neither spoke nor sighed : Stil, though she seemed emotionless I watched her blue ¢ye well, And Vin certain that a tear-drop From its silken lasies fell. { wonder if she loves ine ? »> I’m sure I can’t decide. For sometimes she’s all tenderness, ' And sometimes she’s all pride ; In vain I qnestion of my hopes, My fears still weigh them down, Since e’en her sweetest, sunniest smile _ Is featured by a frown ! [s. F. Call. de A WIFE IN TROUBLE.—‘Pray, tell me, amy dear, what is the cause of those tears ?” “Oh, such a disgrace !"" i “What is it, my dear ? suspense.” don’t keep me in “Oh, T have opened one of your letters, supposing it to be addressed to myself. Certainly it looks more like Mrs. than Mr.” “Ts that all?) What harm ean there be in a wife’s opening her husband’s letters 7” “No harm in the thing itself, but the contents. Suclia disgrace !” ‘Who has dared to write me a letter unfit te _be read by my wife ?”’ “Oh, ne, it is couched in the most beautiful language. But the contents! the coutents !” Here the wife buried her face in her handkerehief and commenced sebbing aloud, while her husband eagerly cadght up ther letter and commenced reading the epistle that had nearly broken his wife’s heart. Tt was a bill from the printer for Afiree years’ subscription for the newsngpeg ! TREASURY NoTEs—The S. F. Call states that J. P. H. Wéntworth, Indian” Agent, lately received upwards of $15,000 of the new Tregetiry Notes to pay off old accounts a Indian. Departinent. To accominvdate the creditors of the Government, /many of whom were poor men, and to protectthem agtinst the necessity of offering the notes for sile to brokers who doubtless would wish to shave them, thus injuring the ereditors and depreciating the value of the notes, Mr. Wentworth couverted the netes into cash, at par, and now he is ready to pay off cluims, as advertised, with good solid gold. Mr.-Wenfworth deserves credit for his action in this matter, ashe ndt only seeured to Goverament ¢ reditors the full value ot their claims, but hus also materially as sisted in preserving the credit of Government by preventing its paper from falling into the hands of shaving brokers.
