~-Henwess Pass —The stage line of Jobn
K. Sale & Co., lately established between
Nevada and Virginia City, we are gratified to
state, is well patronized. We have had the
pleasure of meeting with Mesars. Thomas G. . !*
Bataile, W. A. Gray, and Isaac Williainson,
who came in:the last coach from Virginia
City, and they concur in highly complimenting both the stage line and the road. From’
Virginia City to Eureka, they pronounce the
»road excellent. There are yet some portions
of. it unfinished, but which Mr. Freeman will
vein prime order in less than two weeks,
hen there will not. be a better mountain
pad in California. :
F “ EicutTy-Censvs.”—We are under obli) gations to Geo, W. Welch, bookseller, Com‘mercial street, for a neat little pamphlet, giving the population of the several states and
counties of the United States, under tbe’
', Gensus of 1860, with the increase or decrease
@ population, in each state and county, over
br. under the census of 1850. The compilaion of this little work, which, small as it is,
nust have required much patient industry,
due to the enterprise of Richard Swainon Fisher, M. D., statistical editor of ‘“‘ Colton’s Map of the World.” “A amall but reliable map of the United States is attached
to the pamphlet, making it a most valuable
and convenient. book of reference. Everybody should have one. The price is a mere
bagatelle.

RECRUITING.—Major Winne, whom we
mentioned yesterday, ts now in Nevada for
the purpose of enrolling recruits for a company of cavalry which he has been auther. ized to raise by Gen. Sumner. The Major is .
a veteran and comes with the best of credentials. He will, probably, open a recruiting station in the theater, in the same apartment which Capt. H. A. Greene used as a
rendezvous. Now is the opportunity for the
boys who wish to play soldier on horseback.
New Orleans Picayune publishes
.a letter from Manaseas, dated July 23, which
ontaine the following important admission :
\ From a very accurate report just placed in
my possession, it would appear that our loss
in eo on the field was only between 500
and 600. This is a great loss, it is true, for
they were the bravest of the army, and from
plendor with which they charged were
the best targets.of the enemy. Our wounded will number between 2,000 and 3,000.

PRINCE NAPOLEON AND PRIME WHISKY.
A good story is told of Prince Napoleon, now
on @ visit to the United States. He visited
‘the camps on Staten Island, and one of the
isentries, not knowing who he was, refused
him admittance within the lines. The Privce,
thowever, when he found his rank of no avail,
tried another expedient—a Masonic signal ;
this was answered by an officer, and the visitor was admitted. He complimented the
entinel on the strict observance of his duty,
or he remembered that he was the nephew
of the greatest of iers. Entering the
tents, be tasted a bo of liquor owned
by 5 = the pewaties noe. * not only

“ What is tr” said he. sour
“ Old Bourbon, sir,” replied the soldier.
