HOME MATTERS.
EMPLOYMENT.—A stranger coming te the
mining towns, at this season of the year particularly, would naturally infer, from the number of able bodied men to be seen lounging
about the corners of the streets, that the
mines are exhausted, and employment difficult, if not entirely impossible to procure.
Particularly would he arrive at this conclusion, if he were to listen to the cofplaints of
some of these idlers, who represent thema chance to do so nae any decent remuneration. A little. close observation, however,
would soon satisfy him that most of this apparent distress is voluntary on the part of
those who experience it, aod that his sym_ pathies would be very injudiciously bestowe
on such customers. That an industrious and
“able-bodied man may be temporarily thrown [out of work is quite possible, but this sjgnifies nothing, for we know that such\a man
will not have to look long before he finds'emreasonable wages. But the coantry is full
of men who pretend to be looking for work,
but really wish nothing less than to find any.
Some weeks ago, the South Yuba Canal Co.
advertised fer a lot of men to work on their
ditch. The wages paid for good. hands is
$40 per month ‘and board. ° Being in the
middle of the dry season, one would naturally
suppose that the applications would soon,
hive exceeded the demand. Not so, however. Two days ago—tbat is two weeks af.
ter the posting of the nutices—the number
of men who had‘ presented themselves at the
Jompany’s office was far short of the number required. Now, it strikes us that a
country where chonces of employment at
forty dullars per month and board go a begging cannot be considered as a very litird one
for laborers, although mest of the old California miners would contetaptuously turn up
their noses at the proposal of such wages,
and declare that the country is ruined. But,
.in what other -country under heavens, we
should like to know, does rough labor command forty, thirty, or even twenty dollars
per month? Nowhere, certainly.
Wé have no desire to find fault with high
wages—on the contrary, the fact that a comriunity is able to stand them, whilat it places
a competency within reach of the economical
laborer, also gives the best proof of the
But the truth ie
that a standard of high wages was adopted
at a time when labor was scaree and money
plenty, and that that standard has been maintained long after these positions were reversed, and when it was utterly ruinous to
the employer, and, in our opinion, detrimental to the general interests of the country.
_ But take things as they are, and California
is to-day, as much as she has ever been, the
El-Derado of the nian of heart and muecle—
we do not mean that sort of muscle which
‘‘ strikes from the shoulder,” but that which
is applied.to useful labor. With a climate
unrivaled for salubrity and geniality, making
the cost of maintenance a trifle as compared
with the cold climate of the Atlantic States
er Europe, and the necessaries of life nearly
if not quite as cheap ag in those countries,
whilst his labor commands at least three times
as much as it does anywhere else, we maintain that if there be any distress, short of inability to work, it will be found, in eight
cases out of ten, to have been brought about
by vice or indolence,

Teo the People of Grasa Valley and
Nevada,
1 have been running a line of stages into your
towns since the first of June, thereby reducing
the fare to Marysville from six dollars to three.
My little quill wheel vpposition caused the fare
between your towns and Sacramento to be reduced from ten to seven dollars. I have never
called on your patronage, as . could do well hauling fruit and you could do well riding with the
California Stage Company fer one dollar, which
company, I hope, gave you good satisfaction, especially that portion of you who werc liberal
company.
and ride with me, or pay me sufficiently, and you
can always ride to Marysville for three dollars.
I do not intend to lose any money running stages
for any community ; 1 worked for my money and
I do intend to keep it. It is bétter for you to try
and pay me to keep the fare to a reasonable
price at all times than to pay one dollar to-day
and have six dollars imposed on you to-morrow.
I shall stock the road from Marysville to Sac
ramento on the 10th of September next, and then
I will take you through from Nevada to Saecramento for six dollars; but without your good
will and some of your money, I cannot stay with
you. MARYSVILLE, Scpt. Ist, 1861.
J. 8. McCUE.
N. B.—The stage will leave the U. 8. Hotel, Nevada, on Monday, Wedmesday and Friday, at 7
o’clock, A M. Returning, it will leave tho office,
corner of Second and High streets, on alternate
days, at 6 o’clock, A. M. 63 *
