FLAT. —Our friend, Dr. Cranston, informs ts that a young man, named Henry Forrest, of Orleans Flat, _ “met with a severe accident at Keese’s claims, ~ on Tuesday last, by a.cave of gravel falling on him. The cave struck him and threw him backwards into a cut in the bed rock, ten feet deep, from which, however, he was immeédiately exttieated and placed under the medical care of Dr. Hardy. His injuries, it is hoped, will not prove fatal. aa hae FIRE IN GRASS VALLEY.—A house caught fire,. yesterday, on the corner of Mill and Shoemaker streets; from a defective flue.— Fortunately the atmosphere was tranquil ; and, by energetic action, the flames were speedily subdued. Had there been much wind, there is no telling what terrible destruetion might have been the consequence. The amount of property, assessed on this roll, is $3,328,856, This. appear on the Special Assessment Roll,_which-has+ not yet been returned. PERSONAL.—Ned. Irwin, ex-Sheriff of Sierra county, and one of the most Rccomplishéd gentlémen in the State, paid a visit.to our sanctum yesterday. Mr. Irwin is on his way to Sacramento to attend the State Fair. He will be heartily welcomed there, ashe has been in this city, after an‘absence of several months on the Atlentic side. We would state for the benefit of the female portion of the community thithe returned without a partner to share his joys and sorrows. A Smarr NIGGER.—The St. Louis Het» ald tells ot a black fellow, whose vocation is . toring an alatm-for lost children. When business is dull, he. starts out with unearthly yelling and jingling, and, collecting a squad of curious children, leads them to bewilderment, and then charges five dollars to find them. 4 > Attention is culled tu the advertise . ment of Chas. W. Young’s grand Gift Enter-" “~tainment, in another column. It is really vorth a visit to. his beautiful store and ex“amine the gorgeous lay out of diamonds, ' _ watches, silver ware, anJ in fact a show-cage “full of jewelry, together with $500 in cash. “Tickets one dollar each, everybody should “take at least one chance. . @ ‘ aia _ GROVER & Bakrk’'s Sewmg machines have taken the first premium at the San Francisco Fair. His last victim was a beautiful . young lady nathed-Carrie Owens, the daughter of.a wealthy farmer. residing about three mls from Detroit. On leeraing the true character of the man to whom she had given her hedit’atid'hand, she went almost crazy, and is now on the verge of lunacy. Her heart is almost broken, and it will be a miracleif she survives the attack. He has two wives living in this State. Lord is a native of Connecticut, where his relatives live. The et gated nitaase ty of correspondence as led him to come east‘wad, in the hope of taking back with him the debased wretch. ForBEs, of the Dowmeville Democrat, we are speaking to you! Fort the handsome but for your reminiseenses, may the arch fiend fly away with your memory+ Can you not learn to apply soft soap to the shoulders of a friend, without feeling the necessity of rubbing it off with a brickbat? Your compliments and detractions are mixed in such startling proportions, and in such unexpected intiniacy, that—as is not the case with that beverage of contradictions, cilled lemodide — itis difficult to swallow the melange at a gulp: Do you remember the advice~ that Senator Tappan volunteered to his landlady, whose butter was not exactly to his liking? “Madam,” said he, in that sonorous nasal twang, which so well beeame him, “ be kind enough to put.the butter in-one plate, and the* hairs in another, and we’ll mix ’em to suit ourselves!” You take—do you not? . ‘ t IMMENSE GOLD YiELD—It is asserted that the Mount Ophir cliim in Tuolumne county, yielded over $35,000 on the 7th inst. .
