HOME MATTERS. #20 * THe CopPER AT SWEETLAND.—We have frequently mentioned the specimens of copper ore which have been found in the claims of Messrs. Hitchcock, Dixon & Co., at Buckeye Hill, near Sweetland. The following remarks concerning this copper, written by Mr. G. F. DEETKEN, a gentleman-well known ii this community as a competent metallurgist andmining engineer, will be read with interest: “The claims turned out lately a considerable quantity of metallic copper, besides the usual quantity of gold dust. The two bars of copper, smelted: at the office in town, were cast from dust. taken from these diggings: It appears that the metallic copper, in fine scales, occurs i@{ a clay slate, which has slid down from the high rim of bedrock, surround ing the gold bearing gravel bed. In washing the gravel. around the slide, the decomposed slate crurnbles to pieces and the metallic copper. therein contained, finds its way to the rifles of the sluices. per the slate is charged. with capper pyrites, partly’ decomposed, and oxides’ of copper. The bedrock is covered by an efflorescence of carbonate of copper. , ‘A short time ago, I read in one of our papers, speaking in -reference to these diggings, that in getting further into the gravel bed, the gold therein found gradually turned into copper. This apparently singular circumstance is easily explained by the fact that near the slide, where a great quantity of this copper bearing slate is washed, the quantity of gravel being small in proportion, the decreasé in the yield of gold and increase in that of copper is very visible ; but on leaving the slidesand entering the channel, the cop per gradually disappears, whilst the gold again assumes its original fineness. “ Besides copper, Messrs. Hitchcock, Dixon '& Co lately struck a small vein of ore which they mistook for plumbago, a specimen of which can be seen’ in the mineralogical cabyut at Blaze’s Saloon. But on close examination at tie Nevada Metallurgical Works, this ore was found to-be a first rate quality of binexyd of manganese. The company is now taking out some of the ore, for which they have a ready sale at 4 cents per pound on the ground, the ore’being used for metallurgical purposes in Névada. The veins of manganese vary in thickness, and are imbedded in the came slide in which the copper slate is found. Phe manganese is generally pure;. but cecasivtally the vein of pure ore gives out and /quartz, charged with the ore, takes its pl:ce The dip of tae vein appears to be about 70° to the orig nally horizontal layers of the clay slate.” lie [@ Aleck Griffin seems determined to tring down.the prices of grub and whisky as well as the price of staging. Not content with his performances on the Grass Valley road, his Sacramento stage, which leaves Grass Valley at 6 in the morning and gets to Sacramentw by 54 in the evening, takes passéngers down for $5 froa Grass Valley and $5 50 from Nevada. But Alecs‘s Hotel, which we understand he intends to start shortly in Grass Valley, is going to put the price of feed a little lower. than anything known in California yet. The rates of board at this future establishment, we understand, will be $4 50 per week. We and abundant, although our “devil” says that if he ever stops there when he goes to Grass Valley, he will not be disappeinted if be shouldn't find any pates truffes on the table. In connection with the hotel will be a bar, of course, where liquor will be dispensed at 5 cents per glass. At how many paces it wil be warranted to kill we have not yet heard, but suppose it. will have about the range of rifled cannon. Fire in Grass VALLEY.—The house of Thomas Moran, neay the. corner of School and Main streets, was totally consumed on Thursday night. The National states that the fire was accidental-and that the family of Mr. Moran, who were roused from sleep by the fire, had a narrow escape. The furmture of Mr Cohn, next door, was much injured in hastely. removing it. The house, however, was saved. ’ 9 Dr. DeaL.—We are happy to announce that the Rev. W. Grove Deal has been stationed in Nevada for another year by the Methodist Conference. His congregation, we are sure, will be highly pleased with this announcement, and as for us, who drop into his Church eccasionally, no appointment could have given us more satisfaction. LIEBERT. “ ACARD. »Te the People of Gras#s Valley and Nevada,” I have been running a line of stages into your towns since the first of June, thereby. reducing the fare to Marysville from six dollars to three. My little quill/wheel upposition caused the fare between your towus and Sacramento to be reduced from ten to seven dollars. I have neyer callcd on your patronage, as 1 could do well haul ing fruit and you could do well riding with the California Stage Company for one dollar, which ‘company, I hope, gave you good satisfaciion, es pecially that portion of you who were liberal enough to pay me two dollars and ride with that mpany. Ifnow ask you to consider my case and ride with me, or pay me sufficiently, and you can alway’ ride to Marysville for three dollars. I do not invend to lose any money running stages for any community ; . worked for my money and I do intend to keep it. It is better for you to try and pay me to keep the fire to a reasonable price at all times than to pay one dollar to day and have six dollars impoged on you to-morrow. I shall stock the road from Marysville to Sac ramento on the 10th of September next, and then I will take you through from Nevada to Sacra mento for six dollars; but without your good will and some of your money, I cannot stay with you.
