mong us, day before yesterday, from a can-.
A. A. Sarcenr.—This gentleman returned . S)7.in
DAILY STAGE LINE. ;
ing tour through the State, and addressed
the people of Nevada night: before last. The
e hour at which he concluded his remarks
dé it impossible for us to notice the matec. in yesterday morning's issue. ]
Our people have had so much stump speaking of late, that it is not very easy for any
orater te command ‘an audience of any size,
much less to hold one together for any length
of time. The various questions of the day
have been’ discussed here by so many eloquent champions of the various parties now
soliciting the suffrages of the people,, that it
is no easy matter for a speaker—particularly . °
a Republican speaker—to strikes new channel and entertain an audience for two bours,
as Mr. Sargent did, with a steady flow of
ideas and arguments as forcible as they were
new to his hearers. Mest of the stump speaktenements

ata the estate of Jas. M. Gillespie,
ers who have been here—particularly those
who enjoy the highest reputation for. eloquence—we see on reading the report of their
speeches in other places, repeated there the
. very same harangues, verbatim et titeratim,
of which they delivered themselves here—
wards to the good people of Sacramento and
other places. Indeed, it appears as if these
would-be orators had started on their electioneering campaign, armed and equipped
with a set speech, to be inflicted on the various communities throughout the State.
Those who heard Mr Sargent aight before
last need not be told that his speech was not
one of that sort. It contained a resume of
the political condition of the State, as it appeared to him from his observations during
his late tour, with other matters pertinent
to the eubject, which could not have been apptepriate to any other locality. Nor did-the
French proverb, nul n'est prophete en son
pays, which is equivalent to the saying of
Christ that ‘a prophet is not without honor
save in his own country. and with those of
his own honsehold’,’ prove true in his case. ;
His audience went on increasing from the
start, and at the conclusion of his speech, he
was cheered by. as large an assemblage as
has greeted any speaker that has addressed
the people of Nevada this season.
Nor a CanpipaTe.—Mr. D. H. Williams
wishes us to announce that he has concluded
not to be a candidate for Justice of the
Peace for Nevada township. He wishes his
friends to cast their votes in favor of Mr.
George 8. 8S. Gitchell, who is a worthy man,
and has the misfortune of being crippled,
with a large family to support.
CHUCKLE LucK.—According to Saturday’s Grass Valley National, the medical
gentleman, who supplies this region with
ginger pop, met with a sad miahap at the
Glenbrook Race Course, last Wednesday,
where he was sadly fleeced—indeed, entirely
ruined, pecuniarly by gamblers. He had, or
thought he had, the ‘dead wood” at
*“Chuckle-Luck,”* and went in, horse, wagon,
ginger-pop and all against the game, and lost
of course.
