AnoTHer New FIncp rou Go_p HustERS.—The Oregon Statesman is responsible
for the following thrilling announcement :
Dr. Franklin, whom our readers will temember was supposed to be lost among the
icebergs of the Adis Oraea, has just returned
“from his ‘ong voyage, and reports the discavwry of very rich gold mines in the valleva and
long the ereeka in the low lands of the North
tole. The gold -is very valuable. an assay
hfring proved it to be worth 7.000 to the
shevelfull, The climate is mild, and the
mines can be worked the year round. ProVisions are very high, but reindeer abound. in.
the gurrounding mountains. Those intending tawo to these mines from Southern Ore
gon will do well not to start until next
spring.
GeNxeraL Banks.—The Louisrille Joure
nal thus speaks of this eommander:
The bearing and skill of Maj. General Banks
in the battle of Saturday are mentioned with
applause by the telegraph. “Banks,” say
the dispatches, *‘ was om the field throughont the action and ecanstantiy under fire.
His handling of his troops and personal gal-.
lantry are highly praised by his officers.”
This praise does net euprise us. Banks is
nehumbug. He isa genuine man, He has
« succeeded excellently ang ennnently in everything he has ever undertaken. He is a strong
brave. quick, sagacious, five man. We have
faith in him.
