A Brie} Historical Review
By HH. 4 QAWIS ig oo —
OR ALMOST A CENTURY the lobby, restaurant and saloon of the sheen National Hotel
has been a favorite rendezvous for the men concerned with the development of the natural
. resources of the area. Many of the most significant ‘‘deals” in the fascinating history of gold
mining in California were planned and consummated in this hotel.
Although now completely equipped with every modern facility to assure you of excellent service, it yet retains
the charmingly picturesque atmosphere of the historical era.
In the 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s when the hotel was headquarters for stage lines, telegraph and Wells Fargo
Express Companies, the bar, lounge and lobby of the National Hotel were thronged with the men whose vision,
daring, and energy were responsible for the development of the vast mining and related enterprises.
From the windows and front veranda and the balconies of the National Hotel may be seen the locale of many
of the most significant events in the history of the gold mining of this state.
Across the street is the little “‘flat’’ once famous throughout the ‘Northern Mines’’ as Deer Creek Dry Diggin's.
Here, in the early 50's, gold seekers reaped small fortunes with pans, or rockers, washing their ‘‘pay dirt’’ i
Deer Creek which flows a few hundred feet to the east of the hotel.
Directly under where you are now sitting is the old tunnel of the Nevada County vein from which spectacular gold bearing ore was extracted.
On the present site of the National Hotel, in 1850, was the town jail, a log cabin from which Rattlesnake
Dick, self-styled “‘Pirate of Placers’’ escaped, only to be killed a few weeks later by a sheriff's posse.
The National Hotel Bar, made of Honduras mahogany, is one of the finest examples of the skill and artistry
of early American cabinet making in California. This mahogany bar, originally erected in the Spreckles
mansion on Nob Hill in San Francisco, is by no means the only valuable relic incorporated in the unique
decorations of the National Hotel. Opening from the upstairs lobby is a most interesting and intrinsically
valuable collection of relics collected from the fabulous gold rush days.
We have enjoyed having you as our guests. We want you to eat well. drink merrily and rest comfortably in
our beautiful little historic City, where nature and the history of California abound.
