OF GOLD. * S % = — “tn 1846. “The Pioneer, a monthly journal printed niscences of the early days of California, gives the following ‘interesting account of the discovery made by Marshall: When Captain Joseph Aram arrived in camped on a branch of the Yuba river. Here, for the drat time, they found good water,.grass, fish and game, After a day or two of rest they began to take in. the the curiosities of the situation, Not the least araong these was the character of the rocks and pebbles in the swiftly ranning stream, ‘the women of the party took great delight in these curiously worn and colored stones, Oue of these women was Mrs, Sarah A. Aram, the wife of him whom California loves to honor as Capt, Joseph Aram, the pioneer soldier and earliest legislator. To Mrs. Aram the gathering of these beautiful treasures of the brook became an excifing pleasure, and not only on the surface, but deep as hands could dig therein she sought for still stranger, .prettier ones, In bringing up one handful from beneath the water she saw one dull yellow piece that seemed from its surface weight to be metal. It was flat -and about the size of one’s thumb nail, and when she showed it to the men they all thought it might be gold. ‘Lo test it they pouaded it with a hammer and found it would bend easily without breaking, and the bright golden luster in places showed. that it was indeed pure virgin gold. They thought, at first, to search for more, but they, had no tools to work with and no frovisions to sustain them, and so passed on to the settlement beyond. The gold was afterward satisfactorily tested by good judges. Marshall has'the fame” of the first discovery, and the monument to his memory; but to the memory ,of the worthy Mrs. Joseph Aram, whose discovery of gold was nearly two years before, belongs the honor of the true discovery of the placer mines of Central California Demurrer Sustained. the Superior Court Monday and Judge Caldwell made an order sustaining the demurrer to the complaint, submitted” by the defendant’s attorney, P. Mr. Gill has built a wall to protect the bank from falling and the suit was brought partly for that purpose, Don Cottrell, attorney for Thomas, will now file a new complaint, stating more specifically the dates and cause for damages. — + 2 OBe + Good Advice.
