Brown & Co, THE NEVADA CITY, NEVADA CO., CALIFORNI4 Published eveni Sundays aad Loon) Holilays by by BROWN & CALKINS. N. P. BROWN. UL. 8. CALEINS. Entered. at the Postoffice at Nevada City a: econd-class matter. TRLBPHONE NO. 4. FRIDAY APRIL. 1, 1898 Halil TO THE VETERANS. Speaking of the fact that the approaching G. A. R. Division Encampment will have a Grass Valley day, the Tidings of last evenivg thus expresses the gratification that prevails in our sister town over the prospect: “The visit of the members.of the Grand Army to this city next month should send a tbrill of patriotism through the heart of every citizen who lives within the confines of the township. Never.before have we had the opportunity to do honor to such a deserving body of men, for tothem we are indebted for. many of the privileges we fiow enjoy. Little do we think, and less do.we. seem. to appreciate, what these'brave souls, the majority of whom are in the afternoon of their lives, ‘have gone through, with no hope of reward beyond the mere satisfaction that they had served their country in»time of need, and that they were ‘fighting for principles which were just. Let each citizen resolve to do his best towards giving these old soldiers a fitting reception. However gorgeous it may be, it capnot assume proportions that are not in keeping with the occasion, and however humble the reception may seem to us, it will be appreciated to its fall extent by those veterans who fought for the honor of their country.” In THE’ recent ‘competition for the supply of armor plate to Russia all the European iroumongers were outbid by their American rivals. SirJohn Brown & Oo. quoted $114 per ton: Krupps of Essen, $118; Schneiders, Creusot, $114 A GENTLEMANLY: PROTEST. A Letter From a Member of the Independent Band. Eprror Transoript:—In-a recent is3ue of your paper appeared a report of arrangements for the furnishing of music during. the.encampment. ofthe G. A. R.in this city. They were pleased to state that the Indepeadent Band offered to furuish 12 pieces, at the rate of 34 per day for edch player while Mr. Goyne’s band offered to do it for $8 per day for each man. The latter being the lowest, offer it-was of course accepted. Allow me to state, sir, for the benefit of our citizens that we did. net make any suchan offer. or bid for.the work. In fact, we were not even granted the priviledge of tendering our ser-. vices for the occasion, or setting a price for furnishing music during the event. Che arrangements were all made and settled without our knowledge; and the first news reaching us. was through the medium of the local press. Weare not making this statement. with the hope of changing the present arrangements, but. to convey the idea that we are not so exorbitant asthe people have been led to believe: We appreciate the efforts of our fellow townsmen to make the coming event one of marked success, and we would be the Jast to make any unnecessary inroad on the fund sa cheerfully furnished by them, although we do most strenuously object. to beiog-made a party in a masked fabrication got up for the purpose of covering 4 marked piece of favoritism. Had the courtesy been extended them, Veale’s Independent Band would have done their share towards fornishing music.as rgasonable as any organiza, ! tidn_of the kind, for the amusement of our illustrious and honored visitors, ba InperenpEent BANDSsMAN. [The information on which this: paper’s statement in-regard .to the bid was obtained from a» member of the joint committee who informed_us that such a bid was made.—EpiTor TRANSCRIPT.) es Srrxers Arrer Gotp know they may be disappointed, but seekers after health take Hood’s Sarsaparilla with the utmost confidence that it will do them wonderful good. Secretary Gace struck the key note when lie ‘said in his Oleveland speech: “For international bimetallism the Republican party stands pledged. To secure it all honorable and proper efforts wil] be put forth; but until it can be secured, it is manifestly for the interests of our people to preserve, by all proper means, the present gold standard. Through it we measure by the same.rule-with which our competitors measure, and by it we’ contend in the struggle for commercial supremacy with weapons evenly matched with those. of our -well-armed. antagonists.” SESS ee THe Sacramento Bee says: Governor James H. Budd seems to imagine that he is repairing a great many political fences all over the State, and yet he is dropping nails everywhere which will subsequently be driven into his composite Gubernatorial-Senatorial coffin. Tue Talare Register calls the Sacramento Bee a member of the. “coyote press.” The Bee consoles itself with the reflection that the coyote is distinctively American. ie —$—= How’s this?
