Democrat: The tailors of Marysville are not to have a monopoly on the club system of disposing of ‘their goods. In conversation with one of the local tombstone and monument men we learned that the man of marbie and granite wares was thinking seriously of introducing the scheme inhis line. * He intends to interview all such citizens as . havo ,,ene leg in the grave” and gently put the tombstone club proposition to them. He thinks that if he meets encouragement among this class the way will be open to him among the younger and sturdier citizens.. Just how _much_per.week will -have to be paid as installments or how often the “drawings will take place he has not yet “de-. The tombstone man hitited that the clul) membership would be one hundred. There will be. fifty drawings and the last fifty subscribers will receive a plain pine coffin with their monument. This as an extra inducement. contracted with a neighboring undertaker to furnish. the coffins, The agreement specifically enjoins the undertaker from organizing a club in his line. E All the monuments will be lettered to » ordér, gratis, but if trimmings or platesare desired for the ‘‘overcoais’’ they must be paid for as extras. One prominent citizen, on hearing “of the monument man’s scheme today, suggested that the new City Council be urged to institute a club for the drawing of lots in the City Cemetery. To Drive Away Bed Bugs. The semi-annual house-cleaning season usually calls forth » goodly humber of directions for getting rid-of these pests;some deadly poison, others as harmless to the bugs as to the rightful occupants of the house.. The one that we would recommend, while perfectly harmless to the human family, isin scme way very distasteful to the buge—at least they econ disappear entirely where it is used. If the bedsteads are badly. jifested make a strong solution of alum water. putting in as much alum as the water will dissolve, and wash the bedsteads with it, hot. If this does not entirely destroy them, repeat the process in a week or two. They will probably be entirely subdued with the gecond application. ' When once rid of them a wash with cold alum water when the house-cleaning is dot is sufficient to preclude thejrregain peor al ing a foothold. : The remedy is so simple that those who have been accustomed to hold the enemy at bay with kerosene, paris green, corrosive sublimate, ar other seemingly more powerful agencies, may be a little skeptical in regard to its efficacy. Try it thoroughly, and you will never go back to the old methods of warfare; neither will you find the cortest a very long one. oo An Immense Crowd. The Grass Valley Union of Sunday says : Last night at a conservative estimate there were 2,000 peuple on the streets. No town in the State presents such a lively appearance as does Grass Valley on a Saturday night. j __A gentleman of this city who—was-at-that place Saturday evening informs us that he believes there were not less than 3,500 people on the streets there between the hours of 7 and 10 o’clock. It reminded him of Market street, San ‘Francisco, and that it was the hardest kind of work to get through the crowd on Mill street. Quick Work. Telegraph: Superintendent Frank Dulmaine informs us that the pump was started at the Normandy mine Sunday night and that it will be kept constantly running. It Was just a week ago today since Mr. Dulmaine commenced work and since that time the shaft has been completed to water level, the hoisting and pumping machinery has been hauled to the ground and placed upon the property and is now in perfect ; > -rumuing order. Ina few days the owners « -KARL'S CLOVER ROOT will purify + your Blood, clear your Complexion, regulate your Bowels and make your Head clear as a of the mine from Chicago and San Francisco will arrive here. but act promptly, easily and efficiently Piano Tuning. Twenty years ago, at the age of 18 years, I had swellings come -on—-my legs, which broke and became running sores. Our family phy" sician could .do me no good, and it was feared that the bones Would be affected. At last, my good oldMother Urged Me . to try Ayer’s Sarsaparilla. I took three bottles, the sores healed, and I have not been troubled since. Only the scars remain, and the memory of the + past,,to remind me of the good Ayer’s Sarsaparilla has done me. I now weigh two hundred and twenty pounds, and am in the best of health. I have been on the road for the paste twelve years, have noticed Ayer’s Sar‘saparilla advertised in all parts of the ‘Onited~ States, and always take pleas. ure in telling what good it did for me.” Ayer’s Sarsaparilla Prepared dy Dr: J: C: Ayer & Cos Lowell, Masa.
