Now that the spring has about fairly opened, traveling agents, street fakirs and drummers who take orders from private individuals'are starting on the. road. They have already commenced to put in an appearance, and before the season is over an army of these nomadic parasites will. have visited our town and drawn from the: people a considerable amount of money that would have benefited-the town had it been speut at home. Many of these agents or peddlers take orders for or sell articles that can be obtained of local dealers, such as clothing, shirts, shoes, jewelry, stationery, fancy goods, hardware novelties, etc. Once in awhile an agent comes around with a patented article of real merit, for which he has exclusive territory, and which, there. fore, ‘cannot be obtained here, There is nothing wrong in buying such articles, but to buy things from strangers who have no interests here, when the .same or nearly the same can be purchased of home firms at about the same price, is unfair. If people would use more judgment in these matters it would be better all around. Business firms who carry stocks of goods on which they are taxed to help run the city and county, governments, and who give you credit oftentimes when you do not.have the ready cash, should always be given the preference, unless there is a striking difference in prices, and this is seldom the case nowadays. A community thrives best in which the people thereof strive to help their town in every possible way and to keep all they money at home they can. = (ee @e ee Buckrnquam’s Dye’ for the. The play for Thursday evening will be the Shaughraun. . , The San Jose oe speaking of play and company says : The first performance of The Shaughraur, by the James M. Ward Company, drew a large audience to The Auditorium. All the members of the company were on their mettle and gave full justice to Dion Beaucicault’s Irish drama, and certain! y the success is beyond the most sanguine expectations. James M. Ward as Coun, the Shaughraun, was most acceptable, he was quaint, humorous, easy, natural and kept ‘the audience in roars of laughter. Larimer -Johnstone scored a decided hit as Capt, Molineux. John Pierson, a new addition to the company, won commendations by his clever performance of Robert F. Ffolliott. Those who have only recently became acquainted with Geo Hernandez discovered last night what a sterling and competent actor he is, His performance of Harvey Duff was excellent, Joseph Hyland as Cory Kinchela was exceedingly clever, as was J. J. Sambrook as Father Dolan. Carrie Clarke’ Ward was a favorite and evinced a keen appreciation of the good things belonging to the character of Moya, who is in love with the Shaughraup. Miss May Powers, another addition to this clever company, is very pretty, and made a favorable impression. Arts O'Neal could not have found a nicer representative than Jessie Norton. Miss O’Connor ‘satisfactorily fulfilled the requirements of Mrs. O’Kelly, Conn’s mother. The other characters were in good hands. The play was finely staged and mounted.
