In the year 1854 I was introduced to ““q Mrs. Bennett, who was one of the pioneer women of this coast; she came here with her family in 1844, and settled on a ranch, where the city of Santa Clara now stands. She told me that the year 1845 was very dry, 80 much so that her boys had to drive the cattle to the mountains to get green feed and they took them up the Mokelumne river, where they kept them un-. til there was feed in the valleys. On their retura they brought back with . them three large, bright, shining, yellow stones, as large as a man’s two fists, which were quite heavy. The boys got them as curiosities, but as they had no use for them, Mrs. Bennett placed them on the floor to keep the door from bedng-blowa to by the wind. é * ‘'There they remained until the time of Fremont’s trouble, when he came that way with his little army to conquer the Mexicans. He made his camp near her house and came there frequently. One day he, with two of his officers, + noticed the yellow stones. Frement asked her where she got them. She said the boys had found them ia the dry bed of the. Mokelumne river in the mountains while herding the cattle and they had said there were plenty more of them there. Fremont said they were quite pretty and he would l'ke one of them; she readily gave it; the other two officers wanted the other two, which she gave them. These “stones” were pure gold, as she afterwards found out. I have often thought that Fremont reported this to the government and it might have been a great factor in securit g Fremont _teok the pains to sécure a largé tract of land in the mountains .rather than, in the valJeys, which bé could have done just as C. P. RUTHERFORD. Wants a Night Service. Eprror Transcript: In nearly every town on the Pacific coast where there is telephone service the offices ure kept opéb all night, except at Nevada City. Why is this thus? The Sunset Telephone Company assured its patrons in this city that just as soon as there + VECIT— Tor cre . company brought to my store today a new list of the patrons in this city and I counted them and find there are one handred and fifty-seven—fifty-seven more than they required for aa allnight service. Such a big corporation as the Sunset cannot afford to make a promise that they will not redeem. Will they do it without further notice? Or will it be nevessary for the patrons to get up a petition requesting them to do as they promised? There has been a constant murmuring about this matter for some time, and it will now assume shape im the way of a petition, but it is hoped the “Sunset Company will not compel its patrons to do this, but will immediately announce that it . . will do as agreed with its patrons. . There came to me late one night a strangér in wildest despair resolved to commit suicide that night if I could not help him, says Professor Munsterberg in The Atlantic. He had been a physician, but had given up his practice because his brother,.on the other side of the ocean, hated him and had him’ under his telepathic) influence, troubling him from over the sea with voices which mocked him and with impulses to foolish actions. He had not slept nor had he eaten anything for several days, and the only chance for ‘life he saw. was that a new hypnotic influence might’ d6verpower the ‘mystical hypnotic forces. 2* » er I soon fountl the source of his trouble. In treating himself for a wound he had misused cocaine in an absurd way, and the hallucinations of ‘voices were the chief symptom of his cocainism. These products of: his poisonéd’ brain had sometimes reference to his brother in Europe, and thus the telepathic system grew in him and permeated his whole life. I hypnotized him, and sug: gested to him with success to have sleep and food and a smaller dose of cocaine.’ Then I hypnotized him daily for six weeks. After ten days he gave up cocaine eéntirely,-after three weeks the voices disappeared, and after that the othér symptoths faded away. ‘It was not, however, until the end that the telepathic system was exploded, Even when the voices had gone he for.awhile felt his movements controlled ver the ocean, and: after: six weeks, vhen .1.had..him qnite.well. again, he pretation, s. vividly had ‘he*felt the distant influences. : : VOCAL CULTURE. The First Step Is Keeping the Mouth Shut, Asleep or Awake. ‘ ‘‘Proper breathing is so. essential in voice production that it must receive first attention, and the first requirement is to keep the mouth shut;’’ writes Katharine E. Junkermann in The Woman's Home Companion. ny ? “Of course no tone can be either strong or pure if the lungs-are cram so that the air cannot Pan pi, oo der to increase the size of the } capacity raise the chest and keep the body well and strongly poised. a “So. much*harm has béen done to voices. by allowing the month to become the regular air passage that the need of care cannot be too freqnently em sized. The suspect resembled Moore to a striking degree, even to deafness and the use of an ear trupet, his habit of reading anda constant tendency to glance excitedly at every stranger entering a place. While in town he-spent a good deal of time in saloons, Moore’s whereabouts are still as much a mystery as 6ver.” A spiritualist niedium ofthis city claims to have received a straight ‘tip from thé other world to the effect that Moore is hiding in an ‘old mining tunnel.and is sick. The story of Rome isa tale of murder and sudden death, varied, changing, never repeated in-the same way; there is blood on every threshold; a tragedy lies buried in every church‘and chapel, and again we ask in -vain wherein lies the magic of the city that has fed on terror and grown old in carnage, the charm that draws men to her, the power that holds, the magic that enthralls men soul and body, as Lady Venus cast her spells upon Tannhauser in her mountain of old. Yet none deny it, and as centuries roll on the poéts, the men of letters, the musicians, the artists of all ages, have come to her from far countries and have dwelt here while they might, some for long years, some for the few months they could spare, and all of them have a song that breathes the threefold mystery of love, eternity and death.— “Studies From the'Chronicles of Rome, ”’ by Marion Crawford. The Spider’s Elastic Appetite. The spider has a tremendous appetite, and his gormandizing defies all human competition. A scientist who carefully noted ‘a spider’s consumption of food in 24 hours concluded that if the spider were built proportionately to the human scales he would eat at daybreak (approximately) a small alligator, by 7 a. m. a lamb, by 9 a, m. a young camelopard,.by 1.0’clock a sheep and would’ finish up with a lark pie in which there were 120 birds) Yet, in spite of his enormous appetite, a spider has wonderful power of refraining from food, and one has been known to live for ten months when absolutely deprived ' of food.
