I have a few items about . OUR SAN JOSE COLONY Which I desire to write of. . Be it known that I do desire to scold, and will not except where I can print a moral or think I can, I dislike to find fault, Praise for all is my desire, and when I can truthfully give it my heart wells over with joy; and the thought that this world is not so bad, after all, is a gratification to me that few can understand, Why ,do-I write thus and why do'I head this introduction, ‘“‘Our San Jose Colony?” I will tell you,-but later on. In the early fifties there wasa young man living in Nevada City by the name of T, Ellard Beans; He was a bright, genial man aud made hosts of friends. I believe he at one time was a Deputy County Clerk’ Subsequently he kept a grocery. store on Broad street and did a large business. The store was a sort of headquarters for alk the’ brilliant men with which Nevada City at that time was so plentifully supplied. At that time the war was going bravely on, and many a heated political discussion. took place there, .There were many battles of intellectual giants in those days in your city, aid Mr. Beans’ store was the scene of Party feeling ran high, but [ do not-recall a single over act being committed during these discussions. In time Mr, Beans married Miss Knox, a sister of the Dr.’s. She was a very pretty girl, as . remember her, with bright, blonde hair, Well, Dr. Knox moved te San Jose, and shortly afterward Mr, B, sold out his business and moved there too, What should a Nevada county man who -has plerity of money do when he goes to a strange, but growing place? The answer has been given by many—open a bank. This Mr. B. did and has carried it on successfully ever since; and during all the storms that have swept over the financial seas it has stood as firm as arock. The Bank of.San Jose was established in 1865, and TI. Ellard Beans is the hand that has guided its destinies ever since, His son, William Knox Beans, is Vice President, Many years ago, in Grass Valley, there lived a gentleman named Edward McLaughlin, He kept a hardware store and tinware store on Mill street. In his business and in legitimate mining ventures he made money; and_as.his wealth increased he cast his eyes around to see where he could still further increase it, and at the same time have some of the metropolitan life, San Jose was the place that caught his sight, and thitherward he hied him, He, too, took the financial road and has traveled it successfully, With others he established the San Jose Safe Deposit Bank of Savings, It has a subscribed him, but am informed that he is a wholeAnother Interesting Letter From Our Eprror Transcripr :—Do you know that this is the hardest task I have undertaken ? the mind gives way, and a don’t-care-about} “ment. Seeing the success the earlier pilgrims had met with in that line he invested a portion of his capital in the First National Bank of San Jose, and is now one of its Directors, He got his start in the ditch and mining — business, He lived, as all old Nevada City people know, on Broad street, near the fork, I always did like Mr, 'T., and am glad that in his old age his lines have fallen in such pleasant places. In the fifties, before the days of railroads, when the stages used to come rolling into Nevada City at all times of the night in the winter‘season, there was a private express firm called Henry & Phillip, .[t was composed of Sam. Henry and Henry Phillip, papers to the miners at isolated or remote points, where no postal facilities existed, It was a profitable enterprise, and they made money rapidly, In time, by the extension of mail routes, the profits became less, and the subject of my sketch dropped out, but with a comfortable bank account, I believe ‘he associated himself with the late Henry, Mackie under the firm name of Mackie & Phillip in the banking business in your city, as successors to Mulford & Co, At all events, when they came here they were for a time partners in the stock brokerage business. For some reason they did. not succeed, They were both smart men, it was in the height of the mining, or, rather, stock excitement, an@giioney was as atime Mr. Phillip dropped from my sight, and no one seemed to know what had become of him. Today is good Friday, the great mourning day of the year, and the ‘‘Mass of the Presanctified’”’ was celebrated at the Catholic churth. The host, which was consecrated on the previous day and which had been placed inthe repository for the adoration of the faithful on Holy Thursday, was brought back to the altar and there consumed, ‘The circumstance of this Host having been consecrated previously, or presanctified, gives the name of ‘tMass of the Presanctitied” to this ceremony, after receiving the priest almost abruptly leaves the altar, which reminds those present of the sudden departure of the Israelities after eating the paschal lamb. One of the most remarkable events of this year, from an astronomical and religious standpoint, the position of the heavenly bodies today (Good Friday). Today all the bodies which gravitate around the sun are in exactly the same position they occupied in the firmament the day Christ died on the cross.
