THE JBWISH PASSOVER.
Commemorating the Children of Israel's
Delivery From Bondage.
The Jewish festival of the Passover
which began last Wednesday will not
end till next Thursday. It commemorates the exodus of the forefathers of
the Jews from the land of the Pharoahs, and their escape from Egyptian
slavery. :
The firat two and the last two days
of the festival are observed quite generally as high holidays, when they desist from work, and, dressed in their
best raiment, gather in their homes
and places of worship to give thanks
unto God for the delivery of the race
The matzo or unleavened cakes aré
eaten to commemorate the bread which
the Jews baked by the heat of the sun
when flying from Egypt. Herbs and
parsley also symbolize the frugal fare
eaten by the patriarchs on the exodus,
and all the male members of the family recline on cushions while a more
substantial repast is eaten, as a proof
that God’s bounty bas been vouchsafed
to the descendants of those who were
delivered from bondage.
It is customary among all orthodox
Jews to put aside the cooking utensils
and cookery used during the year and
substitute new ones specially utilized
during ibe Pesach or Passover Feast.
The first born male in Jewish families spends'the first day in fasting to
commemorate the delivery of the first
born male children of Israel who did
ot perish when the first born of Egypt
fell before the wrath of God.
At the Sedur Feast held the -first
night a special service of song, called
Hagadub, is sung by all who are present, in which some of. the beautiful
hymns of Hilael, the Jewish prophet,
are introduced. —
The festival is one of gladness. and
joy, and during the Passover the unfortanate members of the Jewish faith
quite often are remembered by their
prosperous brethren.

At present the town of Columbia

portion of the county are dissatisfied

In order to do this the stage would
