Onicaco, April 11—Upon receiving
news from’ New. York of the capture of
Albert Skoog, who is pronounced by
officers of the United States Secret
Service. one of the most proficient
counterfeiters, Oaptain Porter, of the
United States Secret Service, located
in this city,at once made arrangements to have him returned to Ohicago
for trial. The arrest was considered of
so much importance that a cablegram
was sent to the authorities in Sweden,
,who have been waiting to take posses‘sion of Skoog as soon as the United
States Government gets ‘through with
him. Skoog was arrested in this city on
January 27, 1897, for passing a counterfeit $20-bill. Government officers
searched his house and secured a complete out it: for making bogus bills.
Besides, they found eighty-five $20bills and over $3000 worth of the bogus
Swedish kroner notes. Pending a hearing of his case before’ the Federal
Grand Jury, Skoog was confined in the
County Jail at Joliet, while the .Oook
County Jail was being reconstructed.
Early in the morning of March 22d he} .
made his escape with two other alleged counterfeiters, James Foley and
Jacob Johnson. The latter two sawed
the window bars of the jail, while
Skoog smothered the sounds by playingan accordeon. Skoog is said to

BAD BLOOD,
BAD COMPLEXION.
The skin is the seat of an almost endless variety of diseases. They are known
by various names, but are all due to the
same Cause, acid and other poisons in
‘the blood that irritate and interfere with
the proper action of the skin.
To have a smooth, soft skin, free from
all eruptions, the blood must be kept pure
arsenic and potash and the large number
of face powders and lotions generally
used in this class of diseases cover up
for a short time, but cannot remove permanently the ugly blotches and the red,
disfiguring pimples.
Eternal vigilance is the price
of a heautiful complexion
when such remedies are relied on.
Mr. H. T. Shobe, 2704 Lucas Avenue, St. Louis,
lo., says: ‘*M daughter was afflicted for years
with a disfiguring eruption on her face, w*
fesisted ail treatment. She was taken to ..~
celebrated health springs, but received no benefit. Many medicines were yeigheny but without Foon until we decided to.try S, S. §., and by
the time om first bottle was finis ed theeru tion

completely and left her skin perfectly smooth.
She is now seventeen years old, and not a sign of
the embarrassing disease has ever returned.”

people is receiving the careful consideration of the authorities, At present
40,000 children are in the public
schools, but 3000 yet unprovided for,
There are 800 teachers, ninety of whom
are from the United States. Both
Spanish and English are taught, and
the children are quick and eager to
learn. Religion is not allowed a place
in the curriculum. There is a distinct
and emphatic call for a large central
boarding school of high grade, with
normal and industrial departments.
The outlook for industrial, educational and religidus quickening is encouraging. Duritg the past two years
great advances have beeh made. The
people, in‘spite of the present disturbances, are -expectant of great
changes for the better. The hope of

That such regeneration is to come is
the confident expectation of those who
