A Grand Display of Millinery,
L. Lubeck’s fashionable millinery establishment had their Kaster Opening today, which excelled everything in that line.
The parlors and windows were decorated
with smilax and lilies, making a most beautiful and novel appearance and one that

THE COMING EVENT,
Prof. Michell’s {Fancy Dress Ball Is
an Assured Success.
Prof Michell has completed all arrangements for the fancy dress ball which will be
given at Armory Hall on Friday evening,
April 19th. That it will be a bmiliant
society event is predicted by all party-goers
and others who have heard the favorable
remarks that are being made on all sides
regarding the party, Every attention will
be paid to the comfort and pleasure of the
dancers, and ample provision will be made
for the accommodation of spectators: The
hall floor is to be canvased so that the fine
costumes that many of the ladies are going
to wear will not come in contact-with the
rough floor. Goyne’s orchestra will furnish
excellent music, introducing their most
popular selections, The ball is looked fox
ward to with much anxiety by the followers
_ of the terrpsichorean art, and it is safe to
say that there will be a large attendance,
both of dancers and spectators.

In the Spring
Nearly everybody needs a good medicine.
The impurities which have accumulated in
the blood during the cold months must be
expelled, or when the mild days come, and
the effect of bracing air is lost, the body is
liable to be overcome by debility or . some
serious—disease. _‘V'he_remarkable—suecess
achieved by Hood’s Sarsaparilla,and the
many words of praise it has received, make
it worthy your confidence. We ask you to
give this medicine a trial, We are: sure’ it
will do you good. Read the testimonials
published in behalf of Hood’s Sarsaparilla,
all from reliable, grateful people, They tell
the story.

THERE is more Catarrh in this section of
the country than all other diseases put
together, and until the last few years was
supposed to be incurable. Fora great many
years doctors pronounced it a local disease,
and prescribed local remedies, and by constantly failing to cure with local treatment,
pronounced it incurable, Science has
proven catarrh to be a constitutional treatment. Hall’s Catarrh Cure; manufactured
by. F. J. Cheney & Co., Toledo, Ohio, is the
constitutional cure on the market, It is
taken internally in doses from 10 drops toa
teaspoonful. Jt acts directly on the blood
and mucous surfaces of the system. They
offer one hundred dollars for any case it fails
to care. Send for circulars and testimonials.

The Marysville Democrat,
however, publishes the following. reply to
one of the Record-Union’s articles :
In the Minera’ Convention of January 22,
1892, there were a large number of representative men from. the valley counties, including Hon, Grove L. Johnson, R, T.
Delvin, Hon. ©. P, Berrys How. Jobn
Boggs, Hon. C. F. Reed and others, These
gentlemen joined hands with the representa.
tive men of the mining counties to devise
means by which the long continued litigation hetween the farmers and miners could
be settled. After two days of deliberation
the ecnvention by unanimous vote adopted
a menuorial to Congress, in which the theory
of restraining dams was urged in strong
terms, In’ the: memorial the following.
appeal was addressed to the National law
makers: ‘We earnestly Fréquest you .to
make sufficient appropriations for the erec~
tion of dams or other restraining works in
accoriance with the report of said Commission as may be provided, in order that the
debris resulting from hydraulic mining may
_be re:.trained ag contemplated in said re—
ports; and that the same may be constructed
at such places as the needs of mibing industr'es and for the protection and preser—
vation of farming. and other interests, as
may he recommended by _the Government
enginvers.” Robert T, Devlin was a member ot the committee who drafted’ the foregoing and he fully indorsed the sentiment,
in a speech in the following language: “Tt
is just what we want. The memorial fully
expre sses the sentiments of this convention.
There has been no desire on the part of the
committee to limit the erection of dams at
any particular place.” Grove L. Johnson,
Hon. C. P, Berry, Senator F, R. Dray and
others of the valley delegates made speeches
and indorsed the memorial, A law of Congress was passed in accord with the condi
tions contained in the memorial, a Commission of Government Engineers was appointed
and they have been at work about two years.
They have complied with therequirements
of the law and have compelled mine owners
to erect dams to restrain the debrig Washed
trom the mines, yet the Record-Union would
have its readers believe that the debris from
the mines operated under permits is turned
into the rivers. The comparison ofthe
Parks brush dam érected in the bottom lands
ef the Yuba river where the channel is nearly
two miles in ;width with the restraining
works at a mine is simply a farce. These
works are constructed under permit and the
direction of the U. 8. Engineers, who certainly ought to be as competent to judge of
the durability as the editor of the Recordnion. ;

mits Granted.
‘1 On Monday the Quincy Mining and
next day one big monitor was set to work
will be started. The company is prepared
to’operate five this year, whereas only two
were in use last year, The Plumas Bulletin says that a rock dam’ much higher
than any other dam:in use last year has
. been constructed across Waupouse Creek
opposite the boarding house, thus largely
increasing the capacity of the settling reservoir used by the company for the storage
of tailings. This mine is now fully equipped for a long season’s work. The water
supply is the best had for years, At the
base of Spanish Peak, the source of the
water supply utilized later in~the season,
the snow is fourteen feet deep and solid,
holding immense quantities of water, which
will be freed gradually. as the season advances. Nocompany in this part of the
State has equal facilities for cheap and. efféctive-mining bythe hydraulic process,
and it controls over 2,000 acres of valuable
mining ground located in a region which
has always yielded. up large quantities of
the golden treasure.

Reduction of Insurance Rates.
The insurance agents at Grass Valley this
morning announced a reduction of rates of
twenty-five per cent. We understand that
in.some—instances_as high as sixty per cent
reduction has been given. Thus far the
cutting of rates has not been started in this
city, but the agents are all expecting a
move of this kind and are ready for it, all
‘having instructions to meet any ‘rates offered by other companies. An_ outside
agent today offered a business man here a
reduction of twenty-five per cent. The
break in rates will probably come in a day

It has been argued. by different Kuropean physicians that different cases of rheumatism originate in a slight cold, caused by neglect. That is because people do not take
care of themselves. But the answer was given by one of the leading physicians of Nevada
county: ‘Lhe case is very simple, and our advice is given gratis. If every miner would
wear, all the year ‘round, Marysville flannels, Malena ga in the summer season,
they would have no rheumatism, Instead of paying doctor’s bills you had better wear
Marysville flannel underclothes. And do not forget that you should always have Marys~
