Maryrsvitte, April 18.—While attempting to remove some loose fubricant from the belting on a weaving
machine at the woolen mills yesterday,
William Pickering, an employe, got
his right arm caught in the rapidly revolving mechinery, with the result
that the Ipbysicians later amputated
the member between the wrist and
elbow. Pickering, who is 62 years of
age, isa recent arrival here. He has
been working in the mill about a

varpenter, aged 70-yeare, tried to commit suicide wt Sawyer's tannery yesterday afternoon. He cut bis right

The Southern Pacific Company hes no
fatention of making Redding a terminal on the Sacramento Division, at
present. That is made clear by a letter from R. J. Laws, superintendent
of the division, to the Mérchants’ Clab
of this city. The local organizution
recently wrete to Mr. Laws, explaining
to him that it anderstood the Southern Pacific Oompany contemplated

that the expressions of good will were
