Well, as f. started in to say, who does not remember bright, genial “Ollie” Allen? I think I can see him how, as he walked in. from his mine on ‘Selby Flat, a perfect type of man. He had a winning smile then; he has it yet. He was interested in the first shaft sunk in the Nevada City mining district—the United States, it was called. Unfortunately. for the owners it was just on the: rim of that great chanuel which gave forth its treas. ures in such abundance, It was a case of ‘Thou artiso near and yet so far.” About this time the mines of Washoe were attracting all the adventurous spirits, and “Ollie,” as his friends call him, ‘‘went with the ” pr on.” He arrived in the embryo OUR SAN FRANCISCO LETTER, Sketches of Three Men Who Oncd Made Nevada County Their Home, San Francisco, April 14, 1896. Error Transcript: We had here tcday, in the Fourth Congressional District, what was called a Republican’ Primary. It was held under the auspices of those distinguished (?) statesmen and ardent (). Re publicans, Martin Kelly and Jerry Mahoney and others of their class, It was a roaring farce, The voters were conspicuous only by their absence, That makes no difference. The machinery being in their hands they can stuff'as many ballote in the boxes pa they think is necessary to make a showing! A’few bondred, more or less, is @ matter that concerns their ;class of politicians vety little. There was no opposition. 1 venture to say that no decent Republican cast his vote. Tomorrow, however, there will be the regular Republican Primary and. then we will see a sight that will gladden the hearts of all sincere, honest Republicans. AsI have already’ stated, the better element is taking a hand this year, and their inflaence will be felt. The only object of today’s proceedings is to give these fellows an opportunity to present their credentials, such as they are, to the Atate:Convention, In this public manuer. and over my own signature, I want to warp the voters of Nevada county that the socalled delegates elected today represent nobody but Martin Kelly and Jerry Ma; honey. CAPTAIN JOHN EGAN. ‘ It is with deep regret that I am compelled to record the death of this estimable gentleman, For years I have wanted to write about him but his modesty was such thai he exacted a solemn promise from me that: I would not.say anything about him unti the event which has just occurred should come to pass, He spoke very freely of ’ himself to me, He'was full of stories of early days in Nevada county. It was he that told me of Dan Furth’s experience ae a detective, But his spirit has now fied and I am freg to speak of him as I fain would have done before, “Captain Egan went to Nevada county in the early fifties. He settled in the lively camp of Montezuma Hill, at once becoming a prominent figure. In time he became one: of thé principal owners and foreman of the Irish Company, at that place He made money and saved it, Eventually he removed to this city and entered into partnership with a Mr, Kelly in the wholesale liquor business, the firm being known as Kelly-Egan. Mr. Kelly finally sold his interest to Mr. Fgau, and the busines: las since -been conducted as John Egan & Co, For years he was Captain of the Meagher Guard, of the old Third Regiment, and the members of his company alway: held him in the. greatest esteem and respect. ° He hada fad—it was the perpetu ation of the Irish language, both writte: and spoken. He himself was a scholar in that line, and his greatest delight was to find one who could converse with him in his native tongue. Peace to his ashes! I have kept my word to him, and I now teatify to his great goodness of heart and _ his business integrity. He leaves a large family to mourn his loss, “BOB,” LEGGE. e Whenever I see him the lines of “Bobby” Burns come to my mind: is ““(@hould ‘acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind ? Should acquaintance be forgot, And.days o’ lang syte?” The relations that éxisted between ‘‘Bob” and myself ino yhood’s days were very close.. We. were. partners’ in everything. We even shared our studies, My father provided a private tutor for us, a Mr. Clark, whom all the old residents ought to reymember. But I am afraid we paid more “ attention tothe little suppers my» mother provided for ns-(we studied at. night) thar we did to the business we ought to have been engaged upon. However, we made some progress. We also made money, **Bob” bought a mule team, and . was one of the first to take freight over the Henness Pass, Had he saved his money he would have been independently rich today, His profits were enormous. But he was the good-heatted generous fellow then that he is ‘today, ‘abd no one ever appealed to him for assistance in vain.. That is bis weaknesg--a tonder heart, He took the first load of machinery inte Meadow Lake, and for his skill in guiding his team received. 2 Jage ‘bonus. 1 think he/ married in th: State-ofMlevads. At all evénts he became the father, of two of the brightest little boys that one could possibly wish to look upop, Willie, the youngest, whose ability as-au artist was admitted by all, passed to the great unknown a few months ago, regrette i by everyone who knew bim. His every effurt met with marvelous results, When he left there he was considered one the richest of them all, Bat, alas ! the old, old story has been repeated in his case, and portion of his wealth has been lost in the desire to ineteabeit. He is still interested in California nines, and he totd me, the other day, that if he could only get a fall for the tailings at Selby Flat, and could use the hydraulic orocess, he wouldn’t want any more money. { wish some scheme could be devised to drain that basin of its hidden” wealth. Mr, Allen went to Nevada City in 1852, eo he can safely be called a pioneer, NOTES, Iam sorry I did not see Mr, Calkins. I had made up my mind to drag him to my “den,” the pamé I have given the room in which I write. It was hia lose. It isa very pretty place, with books and pictures and flowers, and a neatness pervading all that would put a Dutch housewife to shame. Watrer MEAD. A LESSON IN MONBY SAVING. _—— A Reno Business Man Reads a San Francisco Drummer a Lecture. The Reno Gazette says: A drummer from a San Francisco printing house was in town a day or two ago telling Reno merchants how much they could ‘‘save” by getting their letter heads printed in San Francisco, He dropped into John Sunderland’s and gave bim the same ‘‘song and dance.” Mr. Sunderland listened to him ‘until he had finished and then he quietly said: ‘Your firm doing business in San Fraucisco never did and never will patronize me to the extent of one nickel, and while I may be ‘saving’ in one direction 1 will be the doser in the long run, The men publishing our home papers employ five and six men each, and they bave families, and when the baby wants a pair of skoea, or the father wants a necktie, suit of clothing, pair of boots, or anything in my line they may come into my store and make an occasional purchase, but if I should give you an order, I could not blame them if they should patronize somé San Francisco merchant, No, Sir, I gonclude that I would be losing money instead of making money by giving you an order, and 1 absolutely refuse.” © Good Morniog. If more of the business men would take the same view of'the matter that Mr. Sanderland does the town would be more prosperons.>~'The habit of ‘sending away. for everything you require, and giving foieign merchants preference over home merchants in ordet to “save” anickle and let $20 pitces roll by while doing it is not saving Anoney. Che Gazette is sorry to be obliged to say, however, that there are some” merchants in many towns who are “‘saviiig” money ia that direction. os ECARD sin cin ERROR Another Relative Dead. When one calla for a fresh egg in a Parisian eating house, the chances are that one will bo properly served. Not that there are no bad eggs in Paris as . well as elsewhere, but there are certain balles whose only duty to sift the bad. or Goabtful éges from the goéd‘onés. “In
one of the ceHars of the halles one sees @ man passing his hands rapidly before his cyes and ia front of a lighted candle, Aronud him aré baskets containing thousands of eggs. His duty is to separate the bad ones from the good, and he is remunerated at the rate of 75 centimes, or 15 cents, for 1,000 eggs. He accomplishes” his work with ‘extraordinary dexterity. With one hand he takes three or four eggs and bring: them to the exact position he-wishes be tween his eye and the lighted. candle at’ if by magic. For an egg to be good the part that appears black must becom: pletely detached from the part that appears white. Inother words, the yolk transparency of the shell, be seen to be . quite separate. ‘The white locks ‘as if it radiates about the central nucleus, and this nucleus is simply the embryo of & ghicken, which being. denser, floats in’ the liquid which nourishes it. ° When there is confusion between the trans parent and. the ubseurepart. theegg ir’ doubtful. feaah ‘ith. Sierra County Delegates Downixvittr, April 15.—The Republican Cetitral Committes of Sierra County has elected the following delegates to the Republican Convention to be held at Sacramento May 5th: A.J. Meroux, J. O, Jones, HANDLING BOA CONSTRICTORS. “lhe Tetck by Which the Serpents Are Managed Without Danger. Snake dealers in South America have venomous wares, though it is sometimes difficult to induce ship captains to carry them as freight. The enake dealers handls the boa constrictor with great deftness. This serpent bites, but his bite is not venomous, so that the chief danger to the handler is from the serpent’s enormously powerful muscles, The dealers have learzied that the boa, te be really dangerous, must have a fulcrum in the shapy of something around which be may coil his tail. e The boa is, in fact, a lever in which the’ ordinary arrangement is power, weight, fulcrum. Knowing this, the dealers drop a soft hat over hia head, that he may neither see nor bite, and theti ‘siatah “im” 46 suddenly from his resting place that he has no opportunity to brace himself by seizing a fixed object with his tail. After that the essential thitig is to see that he is not brought within distance of any such object. A snake dealer on a Brazilian steamer the other day was occupied in ‘trans: ferring his boas from one box to anoth; er. He opened the box an instant, dropped a hat over the head of pne of the creatures, snatched it from its fellows, and rushing across the deck dropped it into the other box, The thing ‘looked so easy. that.a.deck hand, waiting. until the snake owner’s back was turned, essayed to repeat the act. He neglected to use the hat, and with a yell yanked ‘a great siiuke from’ the box with-its fangs fixed in his fingers. Not daring to let go, yet fearing to hold on, he began whirling the snake about his head, meanwhile dancing madly over the deck. The snake man managed to capture the reptile and it.in security. Then somebody exft ‘conéern’ for the rash deck hand, te which the stake owner answered : ‘What, him? He’s all right. But think of my snake! It’s worth 20 of that mug !"’—New York Sun.
