An Upto-Date Story of ‘the. streanous forts 9 claim Lookout
Mountain. The first cotton field met
‘my view going from. Obattanooga to
Atlanta and I also paid visits to different cottonfactories. The conditions
existing in the latter are to be deA Nevada Countyan’s Trip From the Ohio’ plored in every particular, The spinning department of the factory was
alive with children, mostly girls—little
. bare-footed tots from eight years of
; up, clad in clothes of the very
rest material, and with their wan
gotten. These little ones are paid
thirty and forty cents a day and work
from six o’clo¢k in the morning till six
fat night. In other capacities men are
working and supporting families on
seventy and eighty cents a day, and as
one man told me, thére was nothing to
indicate that their conditions would
ever be bettered. Women in the weaving departments manage by dint of
hard work to earn a dollar a day, but
this dollar is earned at a fearful sacrifice, for it is but a question-of time before any constitution will be compelled
to collapse under the strain imposed
upon it. Foremen of some of tlie departments are paid two dollars a day
and as cotton is king in the South, and
it is either: directly or inditectly the
agent through which the majority of
the masses gain a livelihood, an idea of
the condition of affairs to a great éxtent may be arrived at. ‘The one idea
of the young man in the Sonth seems
to be to get married, whether he has
anything or not, and this of course
tends to help make matters worse.
The people in general seem to have lost
all ambition, and seeing nothing ahead,
are leading an indolent and make-shift
sort of an existence which it is doubtful if there is now any way of improving.
In keeping with the cheapness of
labor the cost of commodities is proportionately the same. Outside of the
large cities, and as the rural districts
are exclusively what I have. reference
to in the foregoing, board and lodging
is furnished by private famlies at the
rate of $2.50 and $3 a week, and they
are only to glad to get it.
Among certain classes there is still a
vindictive feeling manifested towards
Northerners on account of the differences of the late war, but the majority
ot the population have laid aside long
ago all prejudice on that score and
rarely make méntion of it. Almost
every city of any size has its Confederate monument, dedicated to the martyrs of the Lost Cause, and there are
scores of extensive exhibits in the different Statee of old war relics, Old guns,
pistols, cantéens, sabers, cannon and
minnie balls, and such relics picked up
on different battlefields are as common
as quartz in Nevada, and one grows
tired of looking at them.
The people consider to this day that
they fought for a cause that was just, and
maybe they did, but at any rate they
have laid aside for the greater part all
animosity entertained then and are now
one, and no better evidence «of their
loyalty and patriotism could be produeed than their manifestations concerning the Spanish-American trouble
now at band. They are unequivocally
for war, and consider war the only expedient by which a complete vindica‘tion of the country’s honor can be attained and the loss of those lives on
board the Maine ayenged.
Now, in conclusion, Iwill say that
the foregoing refers only to the country traversed by the writer, Other localities may be better off, but as the
country lying between Kentucky and
Florida embraced a pretty good portion
of the south, it is safe to presume that
