The fishes that change mos! are the bottom feeders. For their owt protection from other*fishes that woul: prey upon them and the better to etiab). them themselves to capture food thes: change their colors to match the botton, they are on so as ‘to make themselve invisible. They do this often tu a degre. that seems extraordinary In one of the smaller salt water tankat the New York aquarium there are . number Of small flatfish The bottom o the tank is covered with coarse gravel The great bulk of the gravel is com posed of pebbles of a brownish white, sort of pale iron rust color. Scatterec in this are pebbles cf a deeper tinge. with now and then cue of a brownisi. gray or brown black. The flatfieh lying on the gravel at th bottom of this tauk imitate its colors i: their Own backs in a manner that iwarvelous. They are of a mottied brown like the colors of the gravel, and thx amallest. of the flatfish is the most wonderful. They are all thin and li close to the bottom. The edge of the lit tle one blends with it, and its back is a . wonderful mosaic of browns so like the gravel of the surrounding bottom that it appears to be a part of it.
