expense of handling the rock, _ jury on questions of fact. vt a Ret eee DE LEE OTS < THE DAILY TRANSCRIPT Published Every Evening, except Sunday, BROWN & CALKINS, Proprietors. SERVED BY CARRIERS AT 15 Cts. per Week or 60 Cts. per Month WHEN PAID IN ADVANCE: SIX DOLLARS PER YEAR. Telephone No. 4, A SPLENDID PROSPECT. Ore That Pays by Smelting But Not. by Ordinary Mill Process. One of the best prospects for a big mine in this district is the claim owned by John T. Morgan and Edwin Tilley, in Willow Valley district, and, which is now leased to Thomas & Co. The ledge between the two walls is about twenty-five feet. wide, and to all appearances the rock is of a very high grade. It assays from $20 to $70 per ton, but yet it cannot be worked’ profitably by the ordinary process, The reduction works at this place and Grass Valley are not prepared to treat the ore as cheaply as might ba done if better and more extensive facilities were had. The ore is very refractory and has to be crushed dry and then put through the furnace, after whiclrit is treated to the chlorination process. Some of the tock worked in this county gave fairly good results. Several carloads have been shipped to the Selby Smelting Works, and the last lot yielded over $79. per ton. There is an immense amount of rock in ‘the mine, and with the adjacent ledges it would make the largest mining property inthe district, and it would appear that if the proper works were erected, especially adap ted to working this ore, the enterprise would be a big-paying one, The shaft where the rock is now being taken out is only between 20 and 30 feet deep and the ledge can be“traced from the. surface over the Morgan &. Tilley ground and into the Niagara, Texas and\adjoining properties. Thomas & Co, have out “nearly twelve tons of ore, which they will ship in.a few days to the Selby works, the cost of \ which is about $23 per ton for freight and working it, If proper works were near at hand a big saving would be made in the It is probable that there are other ledges in this district that could be made to pay if the quartz was worked by the smelting process, a ee PreMATURE, baldness may. be prevented and the hair made’ to grow on heads already bald, by the use of Hall’s Vegetable Sicilian Hair Renewer, *. THE HARTLEY CASE, It is Argued Before the Supreme Court of the State-of Nevada. The Virginia City Chronicle of Thursday says: Yesterday the case of the State vs. Alice Hartley was argued befere the Supreme Court. General Clark of Carson and Attorney Dodge of Reno appeared for Mrs, Hartley and W. E. F, Deal of Virginia City for the State. The appellant advanced four principal points on which to raise a new trial, They claimed that the jury was not a constitutional jury having seven prejudiced members on it, and one who testified that he had entertained a bias against the accused, That the Court instructed the That it withheld instructions which had been considered well settled-law in New York in the Richardson case, and in. this State in the Lewis case. General Clark occupied ‘the entire day. The argument was continued today and ~ Mrs. Hartley was expected to be in the Court chambers, A large crowd was present yesterday to listen to the arguments, pelea Deafness Cannot be Cured By local applications, as they cannot reach the diseased portion of the ear, There is only one way to cure Deafness, and that is ‘by constitutional remedies, Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When this tube gets inflamed you have a rumbling sound of imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely closed Deafness is the result, and unless the inflammation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever ; nine cases out of ten are caused by eatarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed condition of the mucous surfaces. : We will give One Hundred Dollars for any case of Deafness (caused by catarrh) that cannot be cured by Hall’s Catarrh Cure, Send for circulars, free; « : Address, F, J. Gentlemen—At the regular meeting of Fire Delegates, held on April ‘11th, an order was passed that we present to the attention of the Board the fact that the stopgates in our water system are in bad condition and unfit for immediate action in case of fire. What is necessary, owing to the inadequate supply of water afforded the firemen at a fire, is to have the gates in as good conditionvas any of the fire plugs, so we can have easy access to them in order to cut off\all_portions of the city except in the vicinitysof a fir e, Hoping these few suggestions will meet with prompt action, we remain Respectfully, J. Chronicle, is now in Europe. Prior tu departing thereof, he was interviewed by The Fourth Estate, of New York, and said, among other things : ; The papers are entirely too big. Anyone who have anything to do lacks the time to read the papers through. In fact, busy men have to rely on one paper for their news, This was not true in the past.” With smaller sheets it was possible for active men to view the world from the points of view of all the papers, Both they and the newspapers were better off, The Bee truthfully comments upon the above as follows: Truer words were never uttered. Mr. de Young is decidedly correct in his opinion of blanket sheets although he himself has been forced by_ sompetition to . conduct a conspicuous example thereof. What monuments of slush the San Francisco Sunday papers are! How they pile up great masses. of words in awkward and clumsy columns! How they pad, and pad, and pad, until a good item looks like a printing athlete dressed up for the part-of Falstaff—the audience can scarcely tell where the athlete ends and the stuffing commences! How they take the most trivial item and stretch in out asa school girl does her chewing gum!~_Hew they conceal the jewels of the news beneath the rags of ‘words, words, words,”! How they sacrifice quality on every page to quantity ! Every newspaper proprietor in San Francisco will admit the truth of these remarks, and yet he will continue to make his~ paper bigger, and clumsier, and windier, and fuller of nothing, claiming that he must do it because his rivals are doing it. Probably that is-so,just.now. But it will not be so forever. There is a growing disgust among the people against those vast deserts of paper, with here and there an easis where a reader would care to rest. _It—is not alone in the local columns that this is true, but it is equally as conspicuous in. the telegraphic departments, These journals are apparently running a race to see, not which can publish the most news, but which can print the most matter. The day is net far distant, we believe, when the people will demand all the news, but no slush. If such a demand were made today, the columns of the San} like a pricked balloon. Ona might as well try to stem the rapids of Niagara, as to expect perfect health while a Scrofulous taint exists in the blood. Through its alterative and purifying properties, Ayer’s Sarsaparilla removes every vestige of Scrofulous poison from the blood. WHEN you are constipated, with loss o appetite, headache, take one of Dr, J. H. McLean’s Little Liver and Kidney Pillets, They are pleasant to take and will cure you.
