An Explosion,
Vancouver, April 18—By the explosion of the boiler of the river steamer Rumona yesterday afternoon, four
persons were killed outright and 3ix
others seriously injured. ‘Phe dead
include two women who were passengers on the steamer and two deckhands.
Of the injured the purser and the mate
will probably die. The boiler ex
plosion ‘occurred ‘in midstream.
By the force.of the explosion Mrs.
Morrison and Mrs. Baillie, who were
returning home from New. Westminister, were tlown into the river and
drowned before aid reached. them.

A Big Scare.
Avorn, April 18—This county-seat,
town has had a smallpox scare, but it
is now pretty well over and people are
becoming reassured. There bave been
twocases of smallpox here, and buth
were in the county jul. When. the
presence of smallpox under the County
Courthouse was discovered there was
great excitement among the county
officers and their deputies, and a hasty:
av-cuation of the offices followed. Tne
County Clerk, Sheriff, Recorder, Treasurer and other officers declined to occupy their offices any longer in the
Opurthouse, and set up county offices
about town in other, buildings whereever rooms could be secured. The
two .victims were sent to the pest
house and tomorrow there will bea
grand cleaning and fumigation of the
C-urthouse and jail, and then the
officers who took themselves out so
quickly when smallpox was discovered
will be invited to retarn next WedLnesday. It is supposed that they will
all accept the invitation and that no
serious results will follow.

cows, and sustained quite a severe

New Osteans, April 18 — General
Samuel Pearson, the Boer officer who
was refused a writ of injunction by
the United States Court against the
local British officers to prevent the
further exportation of mules from
this port to South Africa, bas sent a
petition direct to the President of the
United States, asking for the relief
the courts refused. In the recent
decision, Judge Parlange pointed. out
that General Pearson had this right
saying that the matter being a political one, should be taken before the
Executive Department of the Government instead of before the judicial.
Assaulted a Women.
Los ANaeEies, April 18 — Angelina
Lopez, a Mexican woman 80 years old,
was assaulted last night at her little
cabin near Santa Anita, and after being
brutally beaten, was outraged by a
Mexican desperado. The woman is in
@ precaricus condition. The desperado epent the greater part of the night
at the cabin, and.escaped this morning.
Officers are now in pursuit. Four years
ago this same desperate character was
tried for marder, but acquitted on the
ground of self-defense, aud. has since
been ,a terror to the neighborhood
where he lived.

Cells of the Fire.
Bertin, April 18—Field Marshal vo
Waldersee reports that the best part of
the Winter palave at Pekin was destroyed by fire last night.
Schwartzkopp met his death in the
fire, the cause of which is not ex‘plained. The Field Marshal and the
other officers lost nearly everything.
A dispatch from Pekin says no hope
remains that Major-General Sehwartzkopp was saved. His body had not
been found, and it is supposed to have
been completely consumed. A namber of documents were saved. The
quarters of six cffivers, besides those
of Vou Waldersee and his staff, were
gutted. :
