Nevapa City DaiLy TRANSCRIPT NAT P. BROWN, Proprietor. ame FRED ZE. BROWN, Manager. tis SUBSCRIPTION $6 Per Year . By Carrier, Delivered toany vartiuf;the city. Issued Every Evening, Sundays Excepted, at Nevada City APRIL 19, 1904 é + 12 t-de Per Week GREAT many people dissipate more energy between the time when they leave their work at night and when they return to it in the morning than they expend all day in their vocations, though they would be shocked and offended if any one were to tell them so. They think that physical dissipation is the only method of energy-smapping. But men and women of exemplary moral habits dissipate their vitality in a hundred ways. They indnlge in wrong thinking; they worry; they fret; they fear this, that, and the other imaginary thing; and they carry their business home with them, and work as hard mentally after business hours as during them. #46444 4 @ MEASURES BEFORE MEN. AN is prone to underestimate the value of that which M comes to him naturally or which he acquires with ease. The truth of this statement is forcibly brought home to those who observe the apparent low value placed upon the elective franchise by many American citizens. The average citizen is too often’ indifferent to the great responsibility which rests upon him asa voter, and to this indifference more than to actual malice are chargeable bad laws and incompetent and dishonest officials. On this subject a Texas newspaper makes the following pertinent remarks: “Care should be exercised in the selection of lawmakers, whether they are to serve town, county, State or nation Their enactments are in force every day in the year and strike directly at the citizen twenty-four hours in the day. SETS DPS TTR DEATH OF A CHILD Tyrrell Richard Watters Passed Away Last Night, Tyrrell Richard Watters, the young son of Mr. and Mrs. Percy Watters, died at the home of his parents on Nimrod street last night after a lingering illness with consumption. Everything human hands and hearts could devise was done to aid the afflicted child, but it proved of no avail and the little sufferer peacefully passed into the arms of his Maker at 9. o'clock. The little one was bright and precocious and the idol of the bereaved parents, in whose hearts an aching void is left of the memory of their beloved, The heartfelt sympathy of the community goes out to the afflicted parents. The deceased was aged 8 yeares 9 months and 8 days, and a native of Nevada City. The funeral will be beld from the family residence on Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Superior Court. Joseph Hosking received a telegram today from his brother, Jobn Hosking, of San Francisco conveying the sad intelligence of the death of their brother, Benjimin Hosking, at Telluride, Colorado. Mr. Hosking wes born at Gold Fiat about 88 years ago, and here he grew to manbood’s estate. He was merried in this city several years ago to Miss Emily Levee, and their married life has always been a happy one. Some yeare ago he removed from this city, but returned about two years ago and commenced operations on the Little. Eureka mine at Gold Flat. Operations were suspended for a time and just as work was about to be again commenced, the hoisting works were destroyed by fire and the company gave up the proposition, Shortly after Mr. Hosking again removed from this city. Mr. Hosking was highly esteemed by all his acquaintances for his manly and ‘straightforward agalitles, and in‘ business dealings his word was considered as good as a bond. The news of his death will be received with sincere regret by hie many friends in this city. The deceased was & member of the Masonic fraternity and Foresters. He leaves a widow to mourn the loss of a kind*and loving basband. ——_——+ 06e-+-—______ ‘Another Heavy Fall of Rain co Wi Remove Office This is often lost sight of in political:campaigns, and as a result personalities have more weight than measures when votes are being cast. Take the election of members of the Legislature, for instance. The successful candidate is usually a good mixer, who kuows his constituents, but is without a platform. He stands for nothing Other than generalities and looks upon the ballot box as an avenue to personal success rather than the cornerstone of American liberty. He organizes his friends during the campaign, but fails to concentrate his mind upon the needs of his people when given a certificate of election. This is-not as it should be.” The thoughtful voter should cast his ballot for those candidates for legislative positions only who are known to have the interests of the people at heart and who possesses the necessary knowledge to enact laws which will be of benefit to the community and will conserve the liberties ot the whole people. Thus the ballot becomes the voice of the people and the protector of all that is best in civilization. Judgment Entered, J. M. Walling, attorney for Thomas McAulay, today paid to County Olerk F. L. Arbogast the sum of $240, the amount of the jury fees in the case of McAulay vs. Tahoe Ice Company concluded in the Superior Court lest week. It will be remembered that a verdict for $14,780 70 was rendered in favor of McAalay, but upon him announcing his inability to meet the jury demands judgment was suspended until sach time as he could. Upon payment of the money today the court accordingly ordered the judgment entered. The case will probably be apHydraulic Parlor, No. 56, N. 8. G. In my opinion naval warfare has come to a point where absolute fighting qual. ities of vessele and their crews are too much minimized by the counter-element of chance and the other important element of secrecy in attack. But it came, nevertheless, and the way in which the wind howled and the rain descended about 4 o’clook this morbing made the oldest inhabitant wonder if winter was not coming instead of departing. The precipitation for the twenty-four hours, ending at 9 o’clock this morning, was over three inches, which is said to be one of the heaviest rainfalls for April that has been recorded here for many years, About noon a cold gale from the northeast made the mercury drop several degrees and brought a flarry of snow.
