Holidays by BROWN & CALKINS. N. P. BROWN. L. 8. CALKINS, Entered at the Postoffice at Nevada City as « cond-class matter. CRLEPHONE NO. 4. Be SATURDAY .... APRIL 2, 1898. Bank clearings, which show great business activity, are not the only evidences of prosperity. Last week's issues of Bradstreet’s and Dun’s show wonderful activity in all lines all over the country, reports from Chicago, indicating real-estate sales in that city 90 per cent larger than onthe corresponding date of last year,.and lumber sales the best in years; while from St. Louis come reports of “a much larger business among jobbers..and. manufacturers than during ithe, spring of any recent year.” The police have captured a feminine crap shooter. When they descended upon the game she was acting as cashier for nineteen young dice throwers. The officers say that the girl is one of the most skillful shooters on the lower East Side, aa well as an artful dodger. As yet the big poker games run by some swift society women as a Lenten diversion have not been interrupted. THE women of Seattle, Washington, have instituted a society of Klondike Widows. The list is exclusive, being restricted to the wives and sweethearts of men off to the gold fields. “)-MAN WITH A PULL He Wants to Know How He Can Get Shed of It. . The combined inflaence of the two conquered my feeble resistance, and now I also have a porous plaster on my breast that baffles all my efforts at painless separation therefrom. Now while my head is immodestly nude of hirsnte adornment, there is an extremely luxuriant growth of this material under the entire surface of that plaster, and when I attem pt to bravely remove the thing of course there follows such hair-pulling as to stay my trembing hand. Now that I have unbosomed myself to you, will you kindly suggest the best and safest means of umbosoming me from my Aunt’s porous plaster by answering the* following questions: ~ Ast. Is it any evidence that your grip is not cured when the plaster continues to stick to-you? 2nd. Willit in time expend its adhesiveness, or does it endare till it ‘ wears out? 8d. Can you suggest any painless method of removing the plaster witb: out also removing the hair, or,— 4th. Ifasilab of cylicle comes with it, could this afterwards be transplant-' ed on my now naked craiuium with any assurance of it vegetating there? 5th. If not, would you advise the as-' sistance of a barber in removing the plaster, and, if 80, should an anaesthetic be taken? Yours Respectfully, P P, s—I refrain from signing my full name as I donot wish to disclose my Aunt’s identity. Yours Respectfully, W. P. N. B. : The plaster is of the belludona variety that is not punctured, but every square inch is warranted to be full of business. Yours Respectfully, W.D.P. ANSWERS.1. No, but it would seem to be conclusive evidence that the plaster has not lost its grip. 2. It may, for “time tries all,” but as you do not-seem to be “so many” at “enduring” you may wear out first. 8. The expression “painless method’ is the private property of the dental fraternity and should not be ased liere. 4. The negligee forehead (we do not style ours a naked cranium) isa mark of distinction that we would scorn the aid of a porus plaster in obliterating, 5. Yes, even the business side of an adhesive plaster would not offer too great recistance to some. barbers’ razors, and if you willselect one of this kind and allow him to connect you with the gas meter, we will gladly con. sider this interview at an end. —_—_—_—————— Remember if you want something THE Ow. is the place to go to.
