Sam Pack, the Old Miner, Passed Away’ towns.
on Saturday Night.
One by one the old pionieers of this
county are going to the great bey ond.
It seems that more of the old-timers
have passed away within the past tew
months than at any similar period in
many years. Today we are called upon
to chronicle the death of that good old
hydraulic miner, Samuel Peck of Blue
Tent. A few weeks ago he was severely
attacked by rheumatism, and for seyeral days it was thought that he could
not possibly survive. He, however, behousework. Enquire at the Transcript . Hdwards. ° He had collected . congan to improve, and was able to be
around Blue Tent, although badly crippled with the disease. A few days ago. °U8E Table Salt. 15 cents per package, . Valley.
he came to this city on ‘some business,
and was feeling, as he said, pretty well.
It was therefore a shock to his friends
yestecday when they learned of
his death. Sam Peck, in company-with
Dad Edwards and two or three other
men, and L. H. Wells of this city, were
the first to discover the rich blue gravel
mines at Sand Hill, now called Timbuctoo, in Yuba county, in the year 1856.
In the year 1860 Peck, Edwards & Co
sold out their mine for quite a large
sum of money, and then came to Blue
Tent and engaged in hydraulicking.
Peck bought an interest in the Sailor
Flat diggings, becoming a partner of
the late S. E. Storey, the late Ezexiel
Hager, O. C. Campbell and Ben Chad3
wick, the latter now residing at. Hanford, Tulare county. When the crusade
of the valleyites against bydraulicking
commenced twelve or fifteen years ago,
although the mine was paying handsomely, they were compelled to quit
entirely, as there was’ no way of working the mine by any other process, thus
making the property valueless to this
day. Mr. Peck resided at Blue Tent up
to the time of his death. Sam Peck
was known to everybody in this section as a true, noble-hearted and honest
@ manasever lived. He wasa native
of the State of Maine, aud 74 years of
age. The deceased was a single man,
and without relatives in this State.
The funeral is announced to take place
from the Methodist Church on.Tues
day afternoon at 2 o’clock.
