ER EN EDISON’S WAR WITH SLEEP. The Wizard Believes That Man Can} Do Without It. The discoveries made during the present . century have been very numerous and farreaching. It is scarcely possible for us to realize the conditions that prevailed a century ago. So much has been accomplished that one” now hesitaites-to--proneunce-any proposed achievements iinpossible. Among those who in receiit years have contributed essentially to the progress of invention is Thomas A. Hdison. He has accomplished much and is attempting a great deal more. All of his schemes have not been successful, but is impossible to say tiey never will be. He ~-makes-improvements irom time to time, and spares no pains to render his ideas practically usefal Mr. Edison’s latest. idea will likely astonish many of his admirers, and it is probable, that it will take some time. to put it in ‘practical operation.. He is disposed to make }, war on the sleep habit, whieh many people have been inclined to regard as rather useful than otherwise. Indeed, it is consideced by some people that sleep is necesgary to health: and long life. But it is_well known that the same theory has been held with reference to many other things which the advanced thinkers of the day have condemned. Only a few years ago a C:binet officer of the United States decided that tobacco is a necessary of life, and the same “theory is held by many as to lager beer, wine or spirits. On the other hand we have vegetarians who insist that all sorts. of animal food are not only unnecessary but hurtful. There are those who think ice-water is one of the most deadly of all beverages that are inuse. All these things tend to show that somebody is badly mistaken as to what is useful or necessary, and reminds us that we should not-be too dogmatic in adhering to opinions because they are old.Mr. Edison accounts tor the sleep habit as follows: “The truth is that this habit of sleeping originated when there was no such thing as a good artificial light. The people could —not-read, they had no way to amuse -themselves at night, so when darkness came there was nothing left for them, to do but lie down and lose themselves in oblivion. Now that we have the electric ligit and other means of illumination, the world is sleeping less and less all the time. By and by, gradually of cour.e, bit eurely,, the time will come wheh an hour or two of sleep will b2 enough. Then people will find that they have been wasting valuable time. It is all right for a man to change his work or seek some sort of diversion, but that is very easy todo by changing work and varying the subject of study.” This is precisely in line with the philosophy which holds that men are only what their environments make them. In support of his theory Mr. Edison relates that when the phonograph had tobe finished in» cer~ tain number of hours in order to be in London on acertain day, he worked continuously for seventy-two hours without a minute of sleep, ands» did all his assistants with the exception of one or two. His chief assistant says that Mr. Edison has gone on for years working hard with very little rest, merely dropping down occasionally “for a rest of an hour, or, perhaps, for only ten minutes, and then coming up apparently as fresh as iffhe had had a month’: vacation. For these reasons Mr. Edison lieves that the time is coming when men’ Two dividends last Tuesday—each fifteen cents per & The total number of dividends declared by the Omaha Company is twenty-five. maine emcatanies , THE Buoop is the source of health. Purely vegetable, sugar-coated, easy to take and quick to assimilate, this is the idea: family medicine—the most popular, safe, and useful oes in phar-macy. Mrs. M. A. BROCKWELL, Harris, Tenn., says: “Ayer’s Cathartic Pills cured me of sick headache‘and my husband of neuralgia. We think there ts No Better Medicine, and have induced many to use it. ‘ “Thirty-five years ago this Spring, I was run down by hard work and a succession of colds, which made me so feeblé that it was au effort for me-to walk: -I-consulted the doctors, but kept sinking lower until I had given up all hope of ever being better. Happening to be in a store, one day, where medicines were sold, the proprietor noticed my weak and sickly appearance, and, after a few questions as to my health, recommended me to try Ayer’s Pills. I had little faith in these or any other medicine, but concluded, at last, to take his advice and try & box: ~ Before ft had-used-them all, Iwas ‘very much better, and two boxes cured me. I am now 80 years old; but I believe that if it had not been for Ayer’s Pills, I should have been in my grave long ago. I buy 6 boxes every year, which make 210 boxes up to this time, and I would no more be with out them than without bread.”’—H. H. Ingraham, Roekland, Me. AYER’S PILLS Prepared by Dr. J.C.
