For Life Iusaurance see T. B Gray. What about a® celebration in Nevada City on the 4th of July. : Wonderful Prof. Reynolds’ new art. “At the end, six feet will be what the man gets who wants the earth.” For the best of everything in the meat line send your orders to Naffziger, Stolen fruits are no sweeter than any other to the man with indigestion. Call on Ed Schmidt when you want anything in the tobacco line. tf Nevada City in the Spring-time is one of the most beautiful cities in California. One man who does things is worth a hundred who talk about what they are going to do. The regular meeting of Mistletoe Encampment will be held on Monday evening next. The Darwinian theory is always a comforting thought to a. man with a face like an ape, If you have any desire to build ap your town do not send any -orders abroad for goods. When a woman has something which is too good to last she always exclaims, . “Now isn’t it too bad!” At the New York Hotel tomorrow you can get as nice a chicken dinner &s you could wish for. A sixteen months-old child of Mr. and Mrs. P. McCarthy fell a few days ago and was considerably bruised. f Strawberries, the first of the season, are selling at this city for 25 cents. They sold for 15 cents at Grass Valley yesterday. If you should desire anything in the drinking line you should call at the Grotto. It is the most popular resort in town and you are always given . fair treatment. tf If you want your watch or elock repaired ina workmanlike manuer, and at a low. rate, call on Hartung Bros. They always give perfect satisfaction in that line. ‘be funeral of the late Michael Ccugblan, the pioneer who died yesterday, will take place tomorrow atternoon from the residence of E. W. Smith on Park Avenue, with services at St. Canice Catholic church. Wm. Harry, proprietor of the saloon 6! the corner of Pine and Spring Sts. makes a specialty of serving the best 5Ceat beer in .town. Dangerously IU, R.C Walrath received a telegram this afternoon announcing the dangerous illness of his brother, Hon. Austin Walrath. He will go below oo the early morning train. They have received a carload of parlor, dining room and bed room ‘papers—the prettiest and cheapest ever brought to Nevada City. If you need anything in this line go and inspect their stock. Tomorrow being the Sabbath Day all good people are expected to ga, to church. The bed people, generally Speaking; do not go to such places, but it would be a good thing for them to go if they only knew it. We never would bave acelebration in Nevada City on the 4th of July were it not fortwo or three well-known men here, and if they donot take hold of the matter there will be vo celebration. People are wondering if they are thinking it over. The horses attached to Daniel & Powell’s delivery wagon ran away last evening on Main street, _The driver, Joe Pianezzi, was thrown from the wagon but nothurt much. The wagon hit a post and was turned over, the horses breaking loose. One of the axles of the wagon was sprung. — + 2@e---— Personal Pointers. E. A. Thompson, who has been here for some time past, left this afternoon for San Francisco, Thos. Halland son were over from Birchville this afternoon. . H. A. Chamberlain came down from . ’ Gaston Ridge today. , e Dr. E. A. and Gilbert Du Milieu were down from North Bloomfield today. Very Accommodating. One week from ‘next Monday the State and county taxes will become delinquent, after which time five per cent. will beadded. In order to accommodate taxpayers County Collector J. J. Jackson will keep his office open every evening next week till 8 o’clock, This will be a great favor to those people who are unable to be in town during the usual office hours, and will be highly appreciated by them. et Xoctarnal Tragedy. It isa dark night It is also‘a dark kitchen The kind-hearted man in bis stocking feet is after a drink of water for his fretful voungster. He thinks he can find ais way in the inky darkbess. He is mistaken. He turas to the left instead of to the rigbt and falls down cellar. Another good man gone wrong.— Cleveland Plain Dealer, In Need of Reform, “Your effusion.” said the busy editor, “is not available.” ‘“Is there any other place where ] could send it?” queried the disappointed bard. : “Oh, yes.” “Where, sir?” “The bouse of correction.”—Chica News, ‘ special to the Bee from Kes-. wick says: A fire started on. from the brewery saloon tol The cause of the. Miss Kate Chivell.. eo edsoveenegnaee ee Miss Nina Woon..... Groney Ones The relative positions of most of the aspirants have changed since yesterday’s count, the principal gains being by Miss:\Gallagher who goes “rom third place to first, (which latter she held for four days previous to last Saturday and Monday), and by Miss Hampton who has passed Misses Chivell and Woon and’is now in fourth place, It isa close fight today between Misses Mallen and Richards for second place, the formar holding it by. but 13 votes. As heretofore stated, the balloting will close. Wednesday night and the result of the contest will be known early Thursday morning. This will give the winner and her chaperon ample time to get ready for the court of the Queen at the great carnival in Sacremento next month. ‘ The young ladies being urged by their friends as--Nevada City’s repre sentative at the court have each and all cause to be prond of the splendid vote they are receiving. Each of them has aD enthusiastic support, and it would be folly to attempt at this early date to predict who will eventually receive the most votes, The next count will be made Monday afternoon, and it is expected there will in the meantime be some lively votingThe ballot boxes are at the Union: National and’ New York hotels, aiso at Dickerman’s, Vinton’s and Manderscheidt’s drug stores. Ballots are on eale at those places, also at the South Yuba Water Company’s office and at the following. stores: ©. J. Brand’s, Wm. Giffio’s, Jas. M. Foley’s, Chas. Tegler’s, ' °ee Will be a Candidate. ~ On account of the refusal of Mayor Baylis J. Rector to be a candidate for re-election as a City Trustee, a vacancy bwas left as two are to be elected and morning, J. H. Rogers.’ The friends of Philip G. Scadden, much against his wishes, have prevailed upon bim to submit his name to the votersas.a candidate for the place, and he flually consented. Mr. Scadden is in evary way capable of filling the position to the satisfaction of all converned. He is perfectly familiar with every want of the City and if elected, as he .surely will be, he will be found at all times endeavoring to advance everything that will in any way benefit the city A better selection could: not have been . made a Work of a Fiend, Lopt, April 19—The. prompt arrival of neighbors was all that saved six lit tle children feom death ina burniag house near this place Wednesday.night. There is every indication that the fire was the result of an attempt at incendiarism. Two Japanese orchard hands while passing the home of Rev, James Morgan, a colored Baptist minister, discovered the north end of the house in flames, while fire was shooting from beneath the building. The Japanese nearest neighbor, responded. ‘Fortanately a large barrel of water stood in Morgan’s, yard, and Bullock and~ the Japanese went tc work with buckets. The six children, who had been locked in the house, were carried out almost unconscious, -That the fire was a deliberate attempt at incendiarigm is the belief of Mrs. Morgan and the men who fought the flames, The latter declare that the fames of coal oil were strong, and especially so in the cellar, where the fire originated. Mre. Morgan had come into Lodi from her home, which is on the Cherokee lane, a half mile east of town, with her eldest son, leaving. her other six little ones alone {n the houser with the doors locked, They had no light, and no fire had been in the stove for several hours. Shortly before the neighbors arrived to awake the sleeping children the oldest girl was awakened by the watch dog, which barked and rau back and forth on the front porch in an excited manner. She looked through the window and saw @ woman and a boy approach the gate, but thinking it her mother and brother returning paid no more attention to them or the dog. Then she: dropped off to sleep. The next thing she remembered was the arrival of Bullock, who yelled to her that the house was on fire. The Morgans had no oil of any sort in the cellar. Their-oil can was at the rear of the house, in its usual place and none had been taken from it. A Noted Missionary. Dr. G. B, Smyth, who is to speak a3 the Methodist charch tomorrow morning, addressed the students of Stanford University last Sunday. Dr. Jordar and a considerable number of the faculty were present and expressed plgasure and satisfaction with his missionary address. He also addressed the students of the University of the Pacific on last Tuesday. He is in great demand and always advances the cause of missions, so says the California Christian Advocate.
