Of Happenings of Interest in and Around This Section. — J The Elsie A mine on Selby Flat was the scene of a bad cave a few days ago, the shaft and the long tunnel falling in. The cave was due to ihe water soaked condition of the ground, and a8 @ consequence Messrs. Bonney and Haret, the operators, were forced to suspend operations for the present. This wifl work a great. hardship on these gentlomen, as they had just penetrated the pay shoot and were engaged in taking out good ore. Last. night the Nevada County Retail Grocers’ Protective Association held its annual election and elected officers as follows: W.G. Richards, president; Gus Fischer, vicepresident; Frank Guenther, secretary; Thad. W. Sigourney, treasurer; R. W. Gaylord, P. 8. Waldron, Gus Fischer, Thad. W. Sigourney and J. J. Jackson, execu. tive committee. A collation followed the election. Charles Kane, a miner aged twentyfive yeare and a son of James Kane, the well-known lawyer of Sierra City, Slerra county, committed euicide at that place about 8 o’clock last night by taking a dose of laudanam. He was anmarried, and left a note saying that trouble drove him to take the fatal draught. He also requested that Golden Nugget Parlor, No. 94, Native Sons of the Golden West, of which he was a, member, take charge of hisburial. Young Kane had been dissipating heavily for the past several days, The people of Gaston will this year eelebrate the Fourth of July. They} are arranging to give a big picnic, have games, races, etc, to be followed by a grand ball in the evening. The N. San Franoisoo, April 19.—The jury in the case of Thomas Davis, charged with assault on the high seas, failed to agree and was ordered discharged. Davis is accused ef having assaulted
Mrs. A. Ames on board the steamer Alliance, running between this city and Victoria, last October. Mrs, A. Ames was ill in her birtb, and rang for a glass of water. Davis, who was employed as a waiter on board the steamer, answered her summons,. It was then, she claims, that the assault occurred. She ts now suing the owners of the Alliance in the United States District Court. The jury in the case stood six for conviction and four for acquittal. Two of the jury are said to have refused. to convict because of the testimony given by Mrs. Ames, and the other two refused to convict because of the extreme penalty in such cases, which is fixed at hanging or life imprisonment, McKinley Is Sick Tampa, Fla, April 19th.—While in a semi-delirious state as a result of recent illness, Abner McKinley, brother of the late President McKinley, walked from his room into a corridor of the Tampa Bay Hotel last night while a coucert wes in progress, attired only in @ nigbtrobe and calling. for Mrs. McKinley. An attendant took bim back to his room. Today his condition is causing his friends much concern. Robbed the Grave. Held Her Up. . Wauee.ina, West Virginia, April 19— Because she was accused of being ina conspiracy to swindle her employers, Mabel Fulton, aged 19, ran weeping from the store today and in full view of hundreds of spectators, climbed to the highest point of a new steel bridge and threw herself into the Ohio river. The girl’s clothing acted as a parachute ‘and she struck the water a hundred feet below so gently that she suffered absolutely no injury. Men in a boat rescued the distressed maiden, wet, weeping, but unbarmed. Her integrity is now deemed thoroughly es-} tablished, faction by W. D.
