A wing dam is being constructed in the Yuba river, below Smartsville, to direct the water course toward the Postlethwait dredger. The Smartsville correspondent of the Appeal says: The Smartsville baseball club went to Pleasant Valley last Sunday to play the boys of that district. The game was almost too one-sided to be interesting. The Pleasant Valley boys should do some little practicing before challenging a club like Smartsville’s. Our home club undoubtedly became a little careless and as a matter of courtesy allowed the valley boys to get. away with 12 runs while Smartsville made ascore of 47. The coast is open to raids by which terrible damage might be done. Today’s Prize. Key West, April 22—The fitst prize taken by the United States from Spain is the Spanish merchantman Bnena Ventura, bound from &4 Mississippi port to Rotterdam with a load of lumber. a blank shot at it which was ignored. A six-pounder was then fired when the vessel rounded to and was taken into port with its twenty sailors, a prize crew being put aboard. Great extitement prevails, all work at the docks being suspended. No Business Till Monday. WasnHincton April 22—The Senate adjourned today out of respect to Senator Walthall. The.color can be obtained anywhere . ‘onthe surface of the ground, which contains gold, silver, iron, lead, copper, asbestos and arsenic. ‘The richest specimen he saw ran fifty-one ounces to the ton in gold. The richest ore actually worked ran $80 to the ton, but there was only a small quantity of it. The gold pinches out at a depth of about a hundred feet. Owing to the expense of working the mines and the scarcity of water—which sells at Randsburg for three cents a gallon—there is not much use for miners to try that field. The country is better developed already than most people imagine. An Attack on Woodford. _ Henpaye, Spanish Frontier, April 22.— Woodford reached the frontier at 8a m. after an exciting experience.
