A good story is told on Dan T, Cole jn connection with the petition recently filed with the Governor for appointment to a vacancy in the board of Supervisors of Sierra county. Among the petitions was one containing some een 22, 1899, s bees Roster of Their Officers, other in making their stay one of muine p easure from a temporal as . well asa spiritual standpoint. -_ They are a Godly people who say: “We live to make our church [meaning the Methodist Episcopal, of course,] a power in the land, while we live to love every other church that exalts our Christ.” Their motto-is “Look Up, Lift Up.” It would be ont of taste for our citizens to endeavor to jbonor them as we honor secular otganizations like the Knights of Pythias, the Grand Army of the Republic, the Red Men, the’ Native Sons or the Association of Mining Engineers that delight us from time to time by their presence, for the people of these worldly societies revel in the magnificent dancing parties, spectacular parades, wine suppers and such like that are arranged for their entertainment. The tastes of the Leaguers are what some folks call more rational. A formal reception at the Methodist church on Tuesday evening and a chance to go to and down ia some of our big gold mines will be dissipation enough for them and in keeping with their professions. At Tuesday evening’s reception the addresses of welcome will be delivered by the following: The City—Hon. E. M. Preston, The Epworth League—Ray. Maurchie, President of the local League. The Junior League—Harry Tamblyn. The Church—Rev. J. W. Phelps. The response on behalf of the delegates will be by George D. Kellogg of Newcastle, Placer county, the District President. The officers of the District League re.as follows: Presiding Elder, Robt. Bentley, D. D., P. O. Box 222, Sacramento; District President, Geo. D. Kellog, Newcastle; First Vice President, Mrs. E. R. Willis, Grass: Valley; Second Vice President, Miss Donna M. Winnieg, Sutter City; Third Viee President, Miss Olare Polsley, Red Blaff; Fourth Viee President, Mrs. M. G. Powell, Marysville; Supt. Jr. League also; Rec. and Fin. Secy., Mrs. Fannie M. Poorman, 2414 G &t., Sacramento; Corresponding Secretary, Rev. G. M. Richmond, Newcastle; Treasurer, Rev. Jobn O. Hundley, Oroville. e May Start the Pilger, _ Eugene J. Hegarty arrived here last night from San Francisco and today went to American Hill, Sierra county, to examine the Pilger mine on which a company has secured an option. There is a twenty-stamp mill on the claim, ut no work has been done there for ears. Mr. Hegarty says that if the arties who bonded his Mineral Hill uartz claim above Moore’s Flat do not tart work there soon he will do so imself.three hundred names and as it was much the largest of the lot the Governor was disposed to appoint the man fm whose behalf the document was filed. Cole wanted another man and in an interview said to the Governor that the petition didn’t amount to anything, that he knew all the men and so and so should receive the appeintment. The Governor said: “Well, if you know all these people let us look over the petition together and see whether these signers are representative or no bee They proceeded with their task and lo. . and behold not far down on the list appeared the name “Dan T. Cole,” The man with the long petition got the job. eo A Fine New Stock. * he stock of spring and summer goods just received at the Grimes. clothing house, corner of Broad and ‘Pine streets, is complete in every re-spect and one of the finest ever brought .to the town. The fare from this city to Mountain House is now $5, to Downieville $6 50 and to Sierra City $7 50, being a reduction of ‘$1 in each instance. Fm ~ He Settled It. An amusing story is told at Stratfordou-Avon. In the smoking room of a hotel there an Englishman’ and a Scotchman engaged in a heated argument. John Bull was deolaring William Shakespeare to be the only poet of the world, and Donald McPherson was standing up for bis Robert Burns. Words ran high and blows seemed imminent when a self-iconfident littlé commercial traveler determined to > throw oil on the troubled waters. “Gentlemen,” he said, stepping be-. tween the heated disputants, “let me settle this amicably.
