Si Gilbert of Sweetland, Saturday, received:a letter. from Boca which bore the sad intelligence that his son, John Gilbert, met witha very serious accident a few days ago. The young/man was working in amine at Boca and was in 4 stooping position when a large rock fell from overhead and struck him on the back. The letter stated that it was feared that the injuries may prove fatal but thet he would be taken to San Francisco today for medical treatment, providing he was able to travel. Mr. Gilbert ie well-known all along the Ridge and his many friends hope his injuries are not so bad as thought for. : ‘ The Native Daughters gave a party at French Corral Saturday evening in honor of Mrs, George Coffey of North San Juan. A fine program was rendered and a banquet partaken of. Dancing was enjoyed and the party, did not break up till midnight. Mrs. Coffey will leave San Francisco about June first for Dawson City, Alaska, to join her husband, who is superintendent of some mining property there. The public school at Sweetland will close for the term in about three weeks. The teacher, Miss Mary V. McNichols, is now busily engaged iu preparing a suitable program for the closing exercises. The schoo} is kept in a neat and orderly condition and the teacher is very popular with the scholara, The choir of St. Canice Catholic church of this city went over to Cherokee in Hennessy’s large, three-seated wagon yesterday morning and returned last evening. Also makes frames to order for any picture. d19-tf The biggest land and cattle deal that has been negotiated in the Western country for many years, says the Reno Gazette, ‘was’ brought to a conclusion in Salt Lake City Jast Satarday afternoon, when John Sparks of Reno sold to A. J. Harrell of Visalia, California, twenty. thousand head of range cattle, together: with his half interest in 700,000 acres of land and a lease on 700,000 acres more. Mr: Sparks is said to have received $500,000 for his property in cash and a ranch of 12,000 acres inthe Texas; cotton belt. The cotton land is valued at $50 per acre, 80 it will be seen that the actual amount involved in the transaction . reaches the tidy total of $1,110,000. The famous Sparks herd of thoroughbred cattle is not included in the deal. Mr. Sparks retains the animals on his bome ranch near Reno and will continue in the breeding industry. Mr. Sparks said to ‘a Salt Lake Herald interviewer: “I expect now-to devote some attention to cotton raising »n my little 12,000-acre Texas ranch, which was a part of the consideration for the deal. Cotton is king, you know, and if I oan raise enough of it I may make some money. There is no telling.” igs . Take . a Bath.
