On Saturday last negotiations were finally concluded whereby a syndica'e headed by Joho Martin, may purchase the Oakland Gas, L'ght and Heat Company. The Oalifornia Gas and haye made an offer of $70 a ebare for all of the Oakland Gas stock if the same is deposited with the First National Bank of San Francisco in escrow prior tothe 1st day of next September, and the Board of Directors of the Oakland Company has determined to recommend the acceptance of the proposition. Itof course lays within the province of the stockbolders to accept the payment offered or not, and the directors .have nothing to do except in an advisory committee, The California Gas and Electric Corporatien’ has deposited with the Oakland Gas, Light and Heat Company a bond of $100,000, covering its option. Should this offer be accepted by the stockholders by the deposit of a sufficient number of shares of the Company in escrow by September % 1902, the San Francisco corporation will then have until the first day of March, 1904, in which to take up the option. “The syndicate that is negotiating for the purchase of the stock of thé. Oakland Gas, Light and Heat Company is headed by John Martin, who also heads the syndicate now in control of the San Francisco and North Pacific Ooast Railroad. It is generally known as the John Martin syndicate, as he bas been the leading promoter in all its operations. John Martin, who is well known in Nevada county, is now: engineering a general consolidation of the: light and power compaoies, and has come to be a commanding figure in Pacific Coast finance without herald or other flourish of trumpets. His rise is so recent—se recent: that many men inquire who this Napoleon of finance is. Every enterprise he has promoted hae been a success. His deals are large and comprehensive, and all engineered with such familiarity with every detail that his judgment is invariably vindicated, He bas gone on extending his operations and enlisting greater smoants of capital till be occupies a most favorable position ia the fiuancfal world, He Was Held: _ San Francisco, April 21—Fred Henated “Young Dutchy,” was today held to answer on‘a charge of .'elony, he being accused of being implicated in the assault made on Thos. Garrett, of the Evening Post, about ten days ago. The police have failed utterly to locate the man who committed the assault.on Garrett. Witnesses are ,ositive that Hansted sigualled the, approach of Mr. Garrett to the thug who lay in waiting for the editor, and who ner that Mr, Garrett Is still confined to his room. Ask y TOT HT . and the Grass Valley Board of Trade, 80, something more seri-. , é ; Committees Enthusas tle Over Our ~ Resources, The joint meeting at Grass Valley last night of the o immittees from the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce was very entbusiaétic, The delegation which went down from thie city was filled wih the idea of acquainting the outside people of the vagt stores of wealth that lie hidden to our ground, and of the: natural’ resources with which Nevada county is blessed. The delegution from Nevada City was B. 8, Reo'or, Dr. A. H. Tickell, W. H Dunlap, J.J. Jackson and W. F. Englebright, and they were overflowing with ideas as to the proper manner in which to adve:tise Nevada county’s advaut-ges, aud as the Grass Valleyans were fully as wide-awake as our delegates, the meeting was full of enasin and very harmonious. ° The meeting was called to order by Mayor Clinch of Grass Valley end W. F. Evglebright acted as Secretary. After the minutes of the previous meeting had been approved, the committee on resolutions reported having waited on the Bourd of Supervisors, asking for an appropriation of $2000, and receiving a promise of $1000, providing the committee would rai-e a like amount. The report was adopted. Supervicor Miller stated, in response to a question, that there were no strings on the promise. The question of raising the $1000 ae & guarantee to the Supervisors was then brought up. A recess was deClared that each committee might form plans for the futare. After a brief discussion the session was resumed as a committee of the whole. The ways and means committee reported that it had décided on a picnic as the best means of raising the desired amount, but decided’ to set no date until further details had been arranged. The picnic will be held at Glenbrook, and it is the intentioh to make it the biggest attraction ever given inthe county. This committee reported that it desired to ingrease the advertising committee to ten members, edding the names of 8S. Lee Leiter, W. H. Bray and Henry Lane thus making a-committee of five from each place, Messrs. ‘Jackson and) Jamieson wefe appointed a committee to confer with the railroad officials concern‘'ng special rates of transportation. It was recommended .that ubout 4000 envelopes bearing an appropriate design be printed and distributed among the business and professional men to advertise both the picnic and the county. ing committee reported that it had decided to make ho recommendations on advertising matter until it shall obtain ptices on-éuituble samples. The Secretary was instructed to correspond with “Sunset,” the railroad megazine, io an endeavor to secure the best possible rates for space in ite columas. A novel and interesting proposition was suggested, It was proposed to erect at Colfax a pyramid of quartz, so situated as to a'tract.and hold the atteition of passergers going East and West. A» simple ivscription above it would descrite it in brief, while pampblets in the depot would give its bistory and call attention to the mines which furnished the rock. If this idea be carried out quartz. will be asked from every mine in the county, the whole beidg firmly cemented together in an artistic mould. The committee decided to limit the cost to $800, Secretary Englebright was iustracted to secure plans for the structure. The committee resolved to endeavor to make it an object for the Knights of Psthias who visit this coast next Au‘gust to make a trip to this county, and ap excursion may be arranged for. Reorganization of the ways and means and financial committees were effected. ‘Tbe meeting then adjourned until Monday evening next at 8 o’clock in the South Yuba Water Company’s office, Nevada City. In thousands of casee the checking and banishment of disease depends upon instant action ; an hour lost frequently means the snnfiiog out of: some precious life. What will ycur decision be today, oor sufferer? Will you give Puaine’s lery Compound the fair and honest testing that others are giving it with ite certain reward of’ health, strength, vigor, or happiness, or will you remain indiffereut and careless, content to pass your few days or weeks in misery agony and wretchedness uatil the’ dark grave claims you as its victim ? It is almost needless to enumerate the blessed results that flow from Paine’s Celery Compound when used promptly in springtime, as you and your friends have a knowledge of them.
