Frank Higginson, who was shot by Richard Tobin during an altercation at the Hale & Norcross mine, it is now. Fndowment Fund Entertainment thought may recover from the pistol wound in the shoulder. Although in considerable pain last night, his condition today is considered favorable for ultimate recovery. Word has been received here of the death in Butte City last evening of Ali bert Powers, a native of this city and son of Michael Powers. Mrs. Powers left here last Thursday evening in response to a telegram notifying her that ber son was dying of pneumonia. Deceased was about 21 years of age. Don’t Send Minors for Liquor. Some of the grocery stores are complainirg that they are often put to a great inconvenience by some of their custémers, who send children ander the statutory age to the stores for liquor. There is a law that any one who gives or sells liquor to a minor is guilty of a misdemeanor. When a sary forone of the clerks to deliver it, which very often places them at an inconvenience. If the people would remember in the future to eend some one over 18 years of age, and will be appréciated by the grocers and all others who are handling liquors for sale. Personal Mention. . L. W. Evans came over from North San Juan today. Geo E. Cloud, one of Washington’s popular business men, fs in town. A Mooser came down from North Bloomfield today to meet his brother. J. R. Black and. J. Douglas of Rough and Ready were in town today. R. R. Porter of Chicago Park came up today to attend a meeting of the Republican County Central Committee 8S. F. Price came down from Camptonville today on his way to the Bay. W.‘foomey came down today from Moore’s Flat. Mrs. M. A. Huling, who has been here on a visit to Mrs. E. Bond, returned today to her home at Virginia City, Nevada. Grove Deal made his appearance on the street today. Jas. G. Neagle, who has been quite sick since he returned from San Francisco, was able to be about town today. Here on a Visit. Joseph H. Mooser und wife of San Francisco arrived here this morning. They went to North Bloomfield where they will visit the family of Col, L. L. Meyers. Mr. Mooser is the well-known secretary of the North Bloomfield, Kate Hayes and other mining companies ip this county. He is also secretary of many of the companies in which Oapt. Thomas Mein is interested. or that Tame Deer. The tame deer which came to the Texas mine last week, and was petted aiid fed by J. F. Korbel up’to this morning, was sent to Col. John F. Kidder at Grass Valley, asa present. The deer will find good quarters at that place, and the present will be highly appreciated by Mr. Kidder. The transMississippi food exposition is also being held in the new $40,000 auditorium here. The association has 3,000 mem bers, and excursions are coming from almost every city in the state. Goodsell, Metropolitan Temple, New York City; ex-Gov. R. E Pattison and Olarence D. Antrim, President. Union Pacific’s New Fast Train. Cuicaco, April 23.—The Union Pacific Railroad today put into operation a new train between this city and Portland, Ore. This train will be known as the “Overland Limited,” and will shorten the time between the two cities by 2 hoursand 45 minutes. The train will go through without change, and wiil carry Puliman palace sleeping cars, buffet, smoking, dining and other first-class cara. Sentenced to Death. Writssoro, Pa., April 23.—Isaac Birrola, the Tioga county. wife-murderer, will be executed here tomorrow. His crime was particulary revolting. He set fire to his wife’s clothes, and held her so she could not extingaish the flames. Gov. Stone has refused to interfere in the case. Anniversary -of Departure. New York, April 23.—The anuiversary of the departure of the Thirteenth Regiment for the Civil War will be celebrated tonight, with a regimental review, drill parade, and reception. Pedroni arrived in Grass Valley about five years ago and started a little jewelry and repair shop on lower Main street. He stayed there until about a year ago, when he moved into the Holbrooke block, where he was still conducting the business up to the time of his death. No cause is advanced as a reason for his act, except despondency from business reverses. His family, consisting of a wife and six children at St. Helena, Napa county, were notified, but as yet it is not known what will be done with the remains. The deceased was aged about 50 years. James Nolan Expired at Thrce O'clock This Morning.Mrs. James Nolan, one of the oldest residents of this city, died at her home on Pine street, near Suspension bridge, at 3 o'clock this morning. About two months ago she was taken with ‘a severe attack of influenza, and together with her old age proved fatal. Mrs. Nolan came: to this city from County Cork, Ireland, in 1855, and in 1856 was married to James Nolan. She leaves
three grown daughters, Misses Maggie, Mary and Lena, and her age was 68 years. She was a noble woman al a highly esteemed by all who knew her.
