The Building of the Immense South
Yuba Canal.
[By E. L. Ricu.J
No. 5.
It must have been in the winter of 1854-5
the project of building the South Yubs
Canal. was detinitely decided upon. But
something here preliminary to thav.
In 1850 Whartenby, Marsh, Dunn and it
may be others constructed a small ditei
" from Rock Creek to Sugar Loaf, getting
throvgh the gap in the ridge — there
to supply their diggings on what we
cilled *“Green River,” a little dry ravine
emptying into Woods’ Ravive from the
west, a few rods above where the old Sacra‘mento road by way of Johnston’s Ranch on
Bear river crossed, and nearly opposite the
site of Mr. James’ old-time store, I distinctly remember that road, for “it was b;
that road that we first came to Nevade
City, staying the night ,previous at Johnstou’s Ranch—a raft uf thirty or forty of
us; dll afoot except one man, Steve Hail,
who was sick with the mumps, and _the
weiter of this sketch, the latter part of the
way, then a small boy of four cen. years
and pretty.well used up by the two days
journey from Sacramento. An Oregon mav
with a six-inule team hauled the baggage
and such mining outfits.as were got at Daramento, at twelve cents aspound. I well
remember that store on that~road a few
rods east of Woods’ Ravine, and MrJames,
for father luaned him one or two hundred
dollars, at ten per cent a mouth, I guess.

such amount of black sand with the gold as
Mackinaw blankets of necessity that we
might sleep comfortably in that uninhabited
country; the extra clothing we possessed
above what we had on our backs—it was
not much—for we might not return to that
part of the Deer Creek valley, and I -never
did. It may be we included an ax, and
surely a pot to make coffee, a pan to fry
meat, a gun, maybe a revolver, too, for an
emergency and grub for two or three days
tools was to be dispatched at once from Nevada City to the valley. An item of our
grab supply was a Dutch-oven loaf of bread
which Wm. Rich cagried lashed with strong
cribed as ‘‘six inches in thickness and something less than ten feet in circumference.”
I think there was some urgency about our
going at once, and from that unobserved,
out-of-the-way place, as a rival company
had its eye on the same enterprise. For
some years, about the time the water was
so ligh no estimate of the cost could be
made, it advertised for sealed proposals to
build a dam in the South Yuba_river—but
just where it was to be built I believe was not
lefinitely stated. It looked like business.

valuable claim that might be sold for a big
sum. y
THE VOTE FOR THE CUP.
New Invention.

William Barton of this city has recently
he would accept. The custom was to always leave a little black sand in—but it
must not be too much—which trickled into
the scales after the gold dust. When
coin fgr circulation came I guess that put an
end to the black-sand business. Gold. dust
was astillthe currency when we left for the

perhaps others built a ditch from Bigy Deer
Creek to the head of Gold Flat. In 1853
Daniel A. Rich and others built a ditch
from Rock Creek to Sugar Loaf, a little
above the Whartenby ditch, and also began
the Snow Mountain ditch at the Nevada
City end to supply the rich and extensive
mines on the slope below Sugar Loaf; appropriating such supplies of water. as were
available, as reached, designing to extend
it to Big Deer Creek, but tinaily terminat’ ing it at Cold Spring canon. D. A. Rich
ran the line clear to Deer Creek and {
stuck the pegs. We reached the creek and
hung and left the calipers on a pine limb
June let, 1854. It gives mea sensation of
weariness in the nether linibs just to think
of the diffictilty we had in keeping our feet
on the almost continuous steep hillsides
covered with slippery pine needles. Perhaps I got an extra dose of this effort to
stand up, as I had to hustle from chap-rral
thicket to chaparral thicket to cut sticks for
pegs. I don’t know that we ever brought
up full in the face on the pine needles, but
I’m sure we slipped more times than we set
pegs.
Lhe water rights, of course, were held in
the order of the construction of the ditches,
and limited to their capacities. Supplied
from these short. wet-weather streams—the
flow in the dry season hardly sufficient to
keep them from drying up—there were
times even in the rainy season when there
‘was not water envugh for all, and naturally
there was friction, as water was money and
a good deal of it in those days of four bits
an‘inch for ten hours. Ono the Rock Creek
ditches there were some hot words; some
cutting of rival ditches; some whipping out
of revolvers by employes of the older company having reputations as shooters. But
no one was killed, I believe not even hurt.
A Union of conflicting interests was broached
and finally brought about, with a total: of
shares at so much value per share; each.
company putting in its property at an agreed
valuation, and allotting the new stock to
the individual stockholders in proportion to
their holdings in the original companies.
The united companies took the name
‘South Yuba Canal Company.”
Following this censolidation a new ditch
was begun in the summer of 1854 below the
Snow Mountain ditch, as that, if completed,
would tap Deer Creek too high up. The
new ditch, 2} feet wide and 2' feet deep, I
think, tapped it just at Big Deer Creek
forks.
;
It was in February, 1855, while working
on this last-named ditch, that the order
came to our camp for a party to go to Bear
Valley. This camp Was well up toward the .
head of the ditch, the last-construction
camp, on @ high bench in tue hill just below
what, we called “Whirlpool Canon,” from a
beautiful little waterfall and pool a few
rods above where it debouches. into Big
Deer Creek. The names of those compos* . ‘0 °

A Damaging Shot:
About 4 o'clock this afternoon, as Chas.
Hanning, clerk.at. Frank -Golden’s jewelry
store in the Nittignal Hotel building, was
putting a loaded revolver into a drawer, the
weapon was accidentally discharged. The
bullet passed entirely through the showcase
in front of the young man and struck a
large and costly plate-glass mirror on the
opposite side of the store, shattering it
badly. John Farmer, the watchmaker,
was seated at his bench, and the.bullet hit
within a few inches of one of his feet. The
shot attracted a large crowd.
