Alleged Sonate, :
Omana, Neb, April 25.—The case of
the State against James Callahan was
briefly presented to the jury by County.
Attorney Shields this morning, and E.
A. Cudahy, one of the central figures
in the kidnaping incident, took the
stand. Mr. Shields said the State
would seek to identify Callahan as one
of the men, who in the guise of a
Sarpy county official, seized young
Cudahy in front of his home. He will
farther endeavor to show that Oallahan stood guard over the boy in the
house on Grover street. E, A. Oudahy was then called to the stand, but
. had not proceeded to the statement of
any important facte when he was interrupted by a jury recess. The twelve
men ‘were conducted in a carryall to
the Cadahy residence, and thence
along West Oenter street road, which
Mr. Cudahy had traversed with the
$25,000 ransom. After a visit to the
house on Grover street, the jury returned to the courtroom, and. Mr. Cudahy’s testimony will be continued this
afternoon. .

Desire Independence.
. JAOKSONNILLE, Fla., April 24—General Rafael Portuondo, one of the Cuban
Commissioners, en route to Washington, says: Ninety-nine per cent of the
Cuban people desire independence, It
is their wish that military occupation
by the United States come to an end
at once. It may be said that a small
element'of Spaniards, from a purely
commercial motive favor annexation,
-but the wish for independence is felt
by many Oubans and Spariards alike.
These Spaniards who favor annexation
are not impelled by any love for the
United States. They hate Americans,
guarantee as to their property and
business interests. Peace with the
Americans without the independence
of Cuba is impossible—I mean moral
peace. Idonot mean to say that in
the event independence is not granted
war or revolution would follow, but
there would be no sympathy, no friendliness between the peoples.
_. Panic Averted.
Portianp, Or., April 24—A_ special
to the Oregonian from Moscow, Idaho,
says: A run on the first National Bank
of Moscow was started yesterday as the
result of the closing of the Gilbert
Brothers’ Bank at Salem, and fora time
it looked as if a panic was at hand.
A meeting of business men was called,
and a resolution was. adopted expressing the confidence of’ the community
in the bank and a Committee .was appointed to work with depositors and
influence them to leave deposits untouched. By 10 o’clock the run had
been checked.
