KNOW this world is growing better morally all the time. You may not realize it, but it is, when you stop to. think of it. While it is true that there is no great moral wave sweeping over the country, nevertheless there is a strong current constantly at work cutting away -the foundation of immorafity and inebriety. It is unceasing in its labors and is accomplishing great results. “, ay oe The world was not made ina day, neither can it be reformed ina day. It takes time to accomplish great things. There are too many parkhursts in this world. They are good, well-meaning people, but they are impetuous and servous ‘and often hasty. . Mayor Low had not warmed his seat in New York until Rev. Parkhurst demanded that-he banish vice with-one swoop. Of course this was asking the impossible, but we cite the case to show how cranky and unreason‘able some people can be. g ki A great many. people are as intemperate in their actions and language as others are in their habits. _ There was a time, not many years ago, that a man to be popular and successful in business and political circles must have what was called “a Browney on” most of the time, or in other words be a boon companion of John Barleycorn. Many of our leading statesmen, politigians, lawyers and even newspaper men had a well developed “whiskey” blossom on their nose. The great Daniel Webster practically filled a drunkard’s grave. How different now. What a great change has been wrought and in a comparatively short time. It did not re quire a spasmodic upheaval -to bring about this retorm. Such outbursts are ill-advised and often do more harm than good. The demands of advanced civilization are working wonders; a new moral code is gradually coming into effect, as a result of which indiscretions that were formerly winked at are now frowned upon. The young man just entering business, professional, political or. social life soon finds out that he must conform to the rules of this code if he would succeed in life, Look at the sweepin concerns and banking institations, to their employes andj “ clerks, which orders are fo the effect that they must not drink during business hours or gamble at all, and must pay their just debts. One’ tompany after another are following tu plan in the employing of young men until within a few "years sev—a1 hundred fiovsand men will be included in the list. The two thugs who waylaid Wesley Nicbols on Thursday night last and robbed him, after “laying bim out,” were also seen by William Tuylor ia the vicinity of the railroad depot, at which time they were walking out on the track toward Gold Flat. The robbery was a very beld and audacions one and the manner in which it was done indicates that the crime bad been carefully plaaned. The circumstances of the affair areas follows: . About 10:80 o’clock Thursday evening while Mr, Nichole was walking of the track towards home he noticed two men a short distance abead of him. Thinking them to be neighbors and friends be accélerated his speed and caught up to the pair at a point near Wm. Clemo’s plece, just thie side of the trestle. Just as he hailed them and attempted to pass on the righthand side, the one nearest to him suddenly wheeled around and dealt him s heavy blow on the side of his head, under theear. Nichols at once clinched with his assailant, who wore a white cloth across the lewer part of his face, and in the scuffle they fell to the ground and rolled down the bank. Mr. Nichols thought of a barbed wire fence there and-was in dread of being eotangled in-it,and therefore attempted to release his grip on the fellow. It was then that he evidently received the nasty cut across his temple, for when he recovered consciousness his pockets had been rifled and the small amount of money he hed with him was gone. Being agent of an insurance company which does a flourishing business here Mr. Nichols sometimes has a large amount of money on his person, and had the thugs waylaid him the night previous they would have secured a.
