IN 1860 BY N. P. BROWN & CO, 2 Killed : His Sriewd, Uniontown, Pa., April 25 — Mark ‘Thomas Hayes was hanged here today. He walked to the scaffold unflinchingly, had nothing to say, and ‘refased religiogs consolation. The crime which cost Hayes his life has frequently been referred to as “the murder without a motive,” as Hayes and his victim, William Lowden, had beén close friends for years. On the night of July 8, 1899, Hayes, Lowden and some others were carousing at thé Hilt farm, near Danbar. A quarrel arose between Hayes, and Lowden. . Hayes went home, but soon retarned with a shotgun and with the words, “Pil allow no man tocall me a coward,” shot Lowden dead. Hayes afterward claimed that he had no intention of killing Lowden, but wasin the act of firing a Fourth of July salute when his gun was accidentally discharged. The defense was insanity and. lack of motive. Yonsuit Yot Allowed. San Francisco, April 25—Judge Murasky yesterday refused to grant 8 non-suit in the suit of Harace W. Philbrook to recover $100,000 from Van R. Paterson. Motion for non-suit was made on the ground that statements made by Paterson against Philbrook were not slanderous, because uttered without malice and made confiijentiaHy to Emil. Neusbaumer. Paterson was Called to testify in his own behalf. He-said that he bad no malice againet Philbrick, and had never intended todo him injury. He did consider him erratic, however, and had frequently said so. ‘THE. RECEPTION, ALEX HONGEL Proprietor. MU TESTS AND THE REDUCTION OF Matte biagerd p specialty. ly dea r Express orders t tte to. Suartie, April 25—While playing around a bonfire with a comparion named Johunie Nece yesterday afterwas burned to a Crisp in the yard of her mother’s home in this city. The terrible tragedy was witnessed by a neighbor, Mrs. Atkinson. She comprehended the girl’s danger, and while the latter ran screaming around the yard with her clothing burning fariously, grabbed up a blanket and at-— tempted to throw it around the un fortunate victim to smother the flames The latter, in her fright, tarned and sprang directly into the fire, and before she could be reached’ was burned to death. The only other child of the family, a boy, died some weeks ago of pneumonia. DANGER [ROM OVEREATING. Insanity Often Ca * by Too Liber al Indulgenc : Food. ‘It is well known to iu. few medical men that many cases of insanity are jirectly due to overeating and the con-. sequent absorption into the circulation of toxic matters from the intestinal tract, and melancholia,. whether if’ mild pr severe form, is generally due to this rause. Violent paroxysms of temper, whether in children or adults, are often properly referable to a bad state of the blood from this auto toxemia, as are infleed the exceedingly exuberant spirits of old or young at times. Just as we observe in alcoholic poisoning, some
individuals are made temporarily jolly and good naturéd; others are made ugly and unreasonable. ie In view of this condition of affairs isn’t it rather a wise plan for us all to consider rather the needs of the organism for food than the mere question of palate tickling, to aim to eat good instend of bad food and enough of it—that is, not too much—to have the conditions about right when we. take our meals; in brief to try and treat our bodies decently even though we act from a purely sensual point of view? In no other way can we secure the highest possible degree of pleasure. on the average, while by acting thus sensibly we may enjoy practical {mmunity from disease. : The more exercise we take under proper conditions, the more we are exposed to cold, and the clearer we keep from excess in clothing the more we may eat; hence, in order, to enjoy the fullest measure of table pleasures, we must live actively, wear as little clothing as is consistent with comfort and do considerable “roughing’’—sometimes called hardening. With all this we should take our meals at thnes when the body or brain is not overtired, and when we “have leisure to digest,” and, of all things, we should never eat uniess we are hungry. To eat without an appetite is self abuse of the most stcpid sort, since it affords no pleasure and is productive of disease.—Physical Culture. noon, Olive Nance, a 9-year-old girth, . ’ Che Odd Sellows, GheirEntertainment Last Even ing Was a Srand Success.
