In speaking of the ladies the Los Angeles Herald eays: The mass convention of the Woman’s Suffrage Association closed yesterday with ‘. two meetings. The afternoon session . opened at 3 o'clock under the leadership of Miss Mary G. Hay, After the addresses by ‘local speakera the Rev. Anna Shaw answered several written questions sent up by the audience. The. answers in every cage gave evident satisfaction to the enquirers. and considerable amusement to the audience in general, -Miss Shaw's reputation for wit, which, has evidently been gained chiefly from her well-timed. criti. cisms on the men, sometimes severe, but good-humored, had full sway. * * * Tn the evening Music Hall was filled to its utmost capacity (about 1200) with an appreciative audience. Rev. Auna Shaw was presented aa the speaker of the evening, For one whole hour Miss Shaw addressed herself'to the men of the audience after that engaging manner that has given her the national reputation of the firet woman oi the platform. She appealed to the many sides of her male audience, the humorous, the just, the sympathetic, and applause frequent. and deafening interrupted the speaker from both men. and wemen, It may not be amiss to state that the Rev. L, J. Garver of Grass’ Valley will pre}side at Friday evening's meeting. Large audiences will doubtless greet both speak~ ers, The enacting of a law that will simply givé te women the ballot does not compel them to vote nor to take part in affairs of government, it is merely an'act of justice. There are men in every county in the State who do not exercise the right of suffrage and there are many women who do not care to vote, but that should not cause the good men of the State to refuse to vote for it. In Sweden, Eogland, Wales, Scotland and other dountries women -take ap active part in the elections, In Kansas women have equal suffrage with men. Ino Arkansas and Missouri women are permitted to vote on all questions of granting liquor license, In New York many women vote on local matters. In Wyoming women have voted on equal terms. with .men since 1890. In fact twenty-eight States and territories of the. United States have already recognized the justice of woman suffrage in general, municipal or school elections, why then should California hesitate to do an act of eimple justice ? The papers said that Gould was going to buy the Nickel Plate. Gould, when questionéd; looked wise. At the end of a week he meandered, snaillike, over. the Nickel Plate in the rear end of an observation car and had all the air of a man who was looking at a piece of property. Stories were wired about Gould's trip from every water tank and way station along the line, and, béfore Gould had reached Chicago, Vanderbilt, in a fit of hysterics; wired Brice that he would take the Nickel Plate. When her turn came for inspeotion, it was.with a hopeless eye that the reporter sirveyed the toilet. The artful question, however, was asked, as usual: , ‘And your name and gown?’ ‘‘Miss Matilda Jenkins, attired in pink crepon and diamonds,’’ was the studied and prompt reply. ‘*Pink crepon,’’ wrote the newspaper gant name for cheesecloth, but her pen“and diamonds’’ unti} her quick eyes had discovered on the girl’s collar a tiny rhinestone as big as a pinhead, Then ‘‘and diamonds’ went down in the notebook as proudly as if announcing tiaras and stomachers of purest luster. — ‘The next day all the girls ‘behind a notion counter exclaimed enviously over
a well worn newspaper clipping which read, ‘‘Miss Matilda Jenkins, attired in pink crepon and diamonds,’’ and when the society reporter glanced over the printed words she felt pever a pang as to the acouracy of. the information she had given to the public.—New York Times. * De Tabley and His Books. The side on which I was most capable of appreciating Lord de Tabley’s gifts asa collector was the bibliographical. If I am anything of a connoisseur in this direction, I owe it to his training. His zeal in the amassing of early editions of the English poets was extreme; he was one of those who think nothing of hanging ahout a bookshop at 6 0’clock in the morning waiting for the shutters to be taken down. But his zeal was eminently according to knowledge. He valued his first edition for the text’s sake, not-for the bare fact of rarity. Every book he bought he read, and with a critical gusto. A little anecdote may illustrate bis spirit as acollector. In 1877 he secured, by a happy accident, a copy. of Milton’s ‘‘Poems’’ of 1645, a book wien he had never met with before, Too eager to wait for the post, he sent a messenger round to my house with a note to annoutice not merely the joyful favt, but—this is the interesting point—a discovery he had made in the volame— namely, that the line in the ‘‘ Nativity Ode,’ which in all later editions has tmna-— Orb’d in a rainbow, and like glories wearing, originally stood— ~ ™ enamel’d arras of the rainbow wearing, ‘twhich,’? as he said, ‘‘is a grand mouthful of sound and ever so much bet(er than the weak ‘like glories.’ ”—Contemporary Review. 2@eTo Ice Consumers.
