h Memory of Hon. E. M. Preston
. -' noble soul has
A’ kindly eye has
‘A warm right hand
taken flight;
lost its light; .
has fallen low;
The truthful feet refuse to go;
His peér to find in weal or woe,
Ah! whence to look or whither go.
In friendly chat or busy mart,
In stately hall, bore well his part. ~
Soon the floor of “mystic tie,”
He read aright with cultured eye
The lessons drawn on ‘trestle board,” ee.
~ And taught in book of Sacred Word.
’Tis said, “Death loves a shining mark;”’
Then called he thence the “vital spark,”
And left us naught but lifeless clay.
But ah my tongue, “naught,” did I say?
No, no; He left an honored name
In noble deeds. I thus proclaim,
The Reaper seeks the full ripe grain,
And wist not that the birds feel pain;
Bit thrusts his blade with steady swing,
And leaves all else the “dirge” to sing.
’Tis thus he speeds, the grain to lay,
While mortals dare not bid him nay.
With zeal our brother in his place,
Took up his task with easy grace;
Nor faltered though his way was dim,
But builded well, and left to Him
To bring the Harvest Day, when all
Full ripe before His glory, fall.
-Negvapa Crry, Apr.:27, 1903.

io the epring season—a time when men

a time when people feel dull,
despondent and ambitionless.
Today; there are thousands of bueiness meo, mechanics, farmers, avd
dear wives and mothers, too, who,

nearing some organic disease. Paine’s
Celery Compound used at once, will
quickly remove every trace of poison
from the blcod, brace up the weak
nerves, build up the tissues, -and tone
the digestive organiem.
If you, dear reader, feel that your

Thomas Hotel Partially Burned’ This
Morning.
Aboat 11 o’clock this morning a fire
broke out in the roof of the kitchen of
the Thomas Hotel at Forest City, Sierra county, and for a time it was
thought the stracture would be totally
destroyed. When discovered the fire
had gained considerable headway, but
the Fire. Department responded
promptly and in a short time they had
three streams of water, under a two
hundred foot pressure, playing on the
flames, and the blaze was soon gotten
under control. Ihe hotel was a twostory and a half structure, and the
roof and top story. were destroyed,
The furniture and carpets were conloss will be quite heavy, and there was
