MP. CLINCH’S ELECTION NOW
SEEMS TO BE ASSUBED
HE unanimity with which the various counties of this
T Congressional district are falling in line in their indorsement of Chas. E. Clinch of Nevada county as
their candidate for delegate to the National Convention
shows conclusively that he is the preferred candidate for this
honor and gives his many friends in his home county the
increased and pleasing assurance that his election is almost
certain when the State Convention assembles. Several of
the principal mining counties of this district have already
‘instructed their delegates to vote for Mr. Clinch and to work
for his election as national delegate, and the strong endorsement just given him by the Republicans of Sierra county
plainly shows ‘“‘which way the wind is blowing. Ata meeting held by the Republican county central committee of that
county, held yesterday at Downieville, Judge Stanley A.
Smith, Col. M. W. Mather, W. I. Redding and A. S. Nicholls were selected as delegates to the State Convention,
which will convene at Sacramento on May 18th. The committee unanimously passed a resolution endorsing the candidacy of Mr. Clinch as a delegate to the National
Convention, which meets in June, from this Congressional district, and instructed the delegates to cast their
votes for him. This endorsement of Mr. Clinch was wholly
expected by his Republican friends here, as his candidacy
from the first mention of his name for the honor has been
received with favor by the Republicans of Sierra, as well as
by the party leaders of nearly all other counties of the
district.
Mariposa and Calaveras county delegates are not instructed for any particular man but yet a resolution was
passed by the county central committees instructing the delegates to support a candidate from one of the mining counties, which virtually means that Clinch will be their choice.
All the delegates named are said to be ardent supporters of
Mr. Clinch.
The Placer county Republicans will meet next Saturday, and as everybody down there is in favor of Mr, Clinch’s
election, it is said the delegates will be instructed to unite
with the other counties which have already declared for
him in working for his election.
With Nevada, Sierra, Plumas, Placer Calaveras, Mariposa and other counties backing Mr. Clinch it is quite probable that the State Convention will elect him by acclamation, and local Republicans are congratulating themselves
over the prospect of having one of their number represent
them at the National Convention. Mr. Clinch is one of Nevada’s county’s most honored and progressive citizens, and
is a prominent and indefatigable worker in the ranks of the
Republican party, and in this capacity he has rendered valuable services. He is exceptionally well qualified to fill the
duties required of him and can be relied on to follow out the
wishes of the Republican party of this State in the selection
and nomination of candidates to head the National Republican ticket for the coming campaign. A better qualified or
abler man for National delegate could not be selected from
this congressional district, and the numerous counties who
have indorsed Mr. Clinch’s candidacy have done wisely and
acted for the best interest of the Republican party.

Walling ‘and Maller
Property To Be
Started Up.
Messrs. Walling and Muller. bonded
their mine, in the Indian Flat district,
to A. P. Redington & Co., of San Francisco, last night. The property, which
is near the Newtown road and about
& mile and half from this city, has
turned out good ore in the paet, and
mining men have every confidence in
its future. The old Nevada City mine
joins it on the north and the ledges
from that property ran directly into
the Walling-Muller ground. On the
south the Spanish mine lines are encountered, and the general indications
are that as greater depth is reached
still richer rock will be uncovered.
The Redington Company will sink a
new shaft, and open ap the bonded
mine fn good shape. They will begin
this work without delay, and everything possible is to be done to put the
property on @ good paying basis in
short order.
To Work Truckee.
County Assessor Henry O. Schroeder, accompanied by his faithful depaties, E. C. Morgan and E. W. Schmidt,
left this noon for Truckee, where they
will interview citizens relative to their
property assesements. They calculate
it will consume a week or more in assessing property in the eastern end
of the county.

They are here interviewing our merchants and citizens in Tegard to the
California State Board of Trade excursion to the World’s Fair at St, Louie,
which will leave this State on May 18th
by way of the Union Pacifico and Burlington routes. Those interviewed
seemed to favor the excursion proposition very much. It is thought this
