Lawrence. This shows a ratio as large in New York and almoat t' ae large in Brooklyn and Buffalo asin the rural counties. There are two main reasons to aceount for this. One is the difference in the election laws in the cities and in the counties, and the other is the differenee ‘a the character of the population, KM vannot be a difference in polities, for schoharie, one of the few rural -yatic counties, shows a ratio of 3.1 Freene, another Democratic county, ‘haa + ratio of 8.36. The percentage of voters a lower in the cities than in the rural The two counties of Scheneeiady and Schoharie are Democratic and ‘ontiguous. Schoharie is a purely agr altura] county, while a great part of ‘he population of Schenectady o Schenectady, which is a fi ttle city. Schenectady has 6,000 more] . population than Schoharie, but it caste several hundred fewer votes, and there ia s.difference of a third in their ratios. One reason for the high vatios in New York, Brooklyn and Buffalo is the large aumber of aliens. in thoso cities. The liens count in the population, but they lo not count fv the number of voters. Accor2ing to the statecensis New York's pepulation ig one-fourth alien, and the ratio in Buffalo is almost as high. Another thing is the difforence in eleeIn the cities a man has te go to the polling place twice to vote—once to register and once to cast his ballot. In the country he has to go only once and that time to vote. His name may be pui on the registration list by his friends. A comparison of these returns with the alection returns at the time of the Revoiatiohary war and the adoption of tho constitution shows that political inter est ia increasing every year, and that the percentage of those who participate in elections is also increasing. In Massa chusetta toward the close of the last certury, when discussions respecting the federal constitution were going on and when there had been an actual rebellion in ope part of the state, not over 6 per vent ef the population voted, altheugh the censusof those days shows that about three times that percentage of men were zsntitled to vote. the last election the census and registrasions lists were alinost identical in mang districts, and there were some districts where there were more votes the census showed of resiJents in t! bk in the spring when the census was It may be that to the rich men the management affairs politics. and politi eal matters are not relatively por tant as they were when the United States gegan, but a eomparison of the election shose who vote is greater in. this’ state men large business & than ever before.
